The Best of Everything

FOLLOWERS OF
Marie and Michel Bertin .. .
and there are ever so many
who love true French
cuisine . . . are discovering
where they now are at.
Two of the hardest work-
ing restaurateurs in the
business, Marie and Michel
are running the Welcomer
Inn on N. Main (Rochester
Rd.) three blocks north of
University Dr. in Roches-
ter, Mich.
Wish we could print the
entire dinner menu .. .
that's how sensational it is
. . . Marie and Michel have
few equals when it comes to
French dining . . . and the
former owners of Le Bor-
deaux on Livernois are con-
tinuing their policy that
elegant French cuisine
does not have to be expen-
sive.
Listen to this dinner .. .
My wonderful waitress,
personable, smiling and
capable Lori Clark,-first
brought me a basket of
raw vegetables and dip
... then salad ... and our
excellent entree of Pe-
tites Escaloppes de Veau
Chasseur, three pieces of
very tender, mouth-
watering miniatures of
veal scallops on a lu-
scious bed of finely
chopped mushrooms in a
most delectable sauce ...
The choice is yours of
baked potato or deep-fried
eggplant patties . . . I chose
the latter . . . and happily so
. . . This was a meal fit for a
king . . . and the complete
price . . . only $9 . . . plus 50
cents for coffee.
The French touch is so
apparent with Marie and
Marcel . . . Like cute and
smiling Teri Pedigree going
to each table with a basket
asking people very sweetly
if they would like pumper-
nickel, sourdough or French
bread . . . a delightfully fine
accent for gourmet dining
. . . as she gave them their
choice with tongs dipped
into the basket.
Welcomer Inn affords
enough space for comforta-
ble, leisurely dining as
French cuisine should be
enjoyed instead of jam-
packed waiting for your
table . . . and waiters and
waitresses rushing every-
thing.
As the menu prices
indicate, this is certainly
no rip-off operation .
Marie and Michel would
never affiliate them-
selves with one ... They
are a couple of very hard
workers from morning to
night, who only know
complete customer satis-
faction.
The Welcomer is not a
pretentious building .. .
open only a few weeks .. .
and the interior is not ultra
elaborate . . . but clean,
comfortable and very well
laid out . . . with booths
along the walls and tables
in the center . . . Marie and
Michel would certainly
have nothing but linen tab-
lecloths and napkins.
The French menu is
served only from 5 p.m. to 10

p.m. . . . and only in the
French main dining room
that seats 114 . . . If needed,
20 more may be served in
the brunch room . . . A pri-
vate bar and lounge seats 42
and seating for 70 is in a
private banquet room.
It is owned by Michael
and Jane Baiz and Robert
and Kathie Blume . . .
Marie and Michel operate
the Welcomer for them .. .
and there are very' few bet-
ter French chefs like Marie
or manager-hosts like
Michel.
The service is wonder-
ful ... like smiling,
courteous cocktail wait-
ress Bridget Knox ... to
Angelo Kellapoures, a
waiter since 1947 when
he came to this country
from Greece and worked
at places like The Olde
Wayne Club, Lelli's, Ro-
ma's, Joe Muer's and
London Chop House .
and a few people who
worked with the Bertins
at their Le Bordeaux ...
Sharon Wright was 16
years old and a pantry
girl there . . . Today she is
a well-respected waitress
at the Welcomer ...
Michael Dickey is a
former Le Bordeaux wai-
ter and now does his very
fine work here evenings.
Marie and Michel opened
Le Bordeaux originally as a
pastry shop on Grand River
and Greenfield in 1965 .. .
in 1966, they opened it as a
restaurant and retained the
pastry shop.
In September 1968, they
opened Le Bordeaux on
Livernois, north of Seven
Mile . . . and closed August
1973.
Yes, the Welcomer Inn
also has entertainment
... and among the very
best ... Loving Cup with
Marlene Hill comes on at
9:30 p.m. Wednesday
through Saturday for lis-
tening and dancing ...
They'll be there through
October.
Usually, it takes more
than one visit to a restau-
rant in offering it a fair trial
. . . However, the record of
Chef Marie and manager-
host Michel Bertin speaks
for itself . . . they are TRUE
French artistes . . . repre-
senting French cuisine and
service at its finest.
I still can't get over hav-
ing such an elegant French
dinner for $9!
RUMOR DEPT.... Is it
true that Chuck Muer will
take over the site of former
Sultan's Table on South-
field and 10 Mile? . . .
Maybe even enlarge it for
the Southfield Charley's
he's wanted?
FIRST ANNUAL beer
bout was won by Pickle
Barrel Deli against Bagel
Basket Deli . . . on the
baseball field at Southfield
Civic Center . . . score of 8 to
6.
Winning pitcher was Al
Winkler, co-owner with Sy
Ginsberg at Pickle Barrel,
tossing his mixtures to vic-
tory . . . Losing pitcher was
