stitute in pastoral care and -
counseling will offer, for the-.
first time in the New York
area, clinical training to
clergy of all faiths to serve
congregants in severe emo-
tional crises" according to
Rabbi Jerome R. Malino,
president of the Central
Conference of American
Rabbis, the association of
Reform rabbis.
The program will be a
two-year sequence of two
two-hour sessions for 34
weeks a year and will begin
Nov. 8 at the new institute
at the Hebrew Union Col-
lege campus, co sponsored
by the CCAR and the He-
brew Union College-Jewish
Institute of Religion, the
Reform seminary.
The institute in Manhat-
tan will entitle participants
to receive two graduate cre:
dits yearly from the HUC-
JIR,, according to Rabbi El-
liot L. Stevens, CCAR ad-
ministrative secretary. He
said that unlike most other
programs, which offer train-
ing in pastoral psychology
with an academic orienta-
tion, the new institute will
use a clinical consultation
method, permitting par-
ticipating clergy to review
their personal rases before a
group of peers and to take
their learned expertise and
insight back to their con-
gregants for immediate ap-
plication.

former Israeli Prime Minis-
ter Yitzhak Rabin recalled
the words of an Egyptian
diplomat.
The envoy wrote 21/2 years
ago that a peace treaty
would result in Israel's de-

Tragic Murder
Is Detailed in
Book by Millett

Out of a human tragedy
that took place nearly 15
years ago, a study of sadism
and barbarism has de-
veloped that has its lessons
for this generation.
The Basement" by Kate
Millett (Simon and Schus-
ter) is the story of the
bizarre murder of 16-year-
old Sylvia Likens in 1965.
Millett retells the event,
using the torture and mur-
der of the girl as the starting
point for a series of medita-
tions, both personal and
philosophical, on the nature
of child abuse, the role of sex
and sexual shame in the so-
cial control of women, and
the dynamics of group
cruelty.
Millett, a sculptor as well
writer, created five ex-
ibitions around the subject
of "The Basement" before
embarking on the book, four
years ago.
