Jewish Doctors Dealing
With Pain in New Book
NEW YORK — Chronic
pain is America's most
common, expensive and de-
bilitating disorder. It is
also, perhaps, the most
widely misunderstood and
mistreated, according to Dr.
David E. Bresler, director
of the UCLA Pain Control
Clinic.
In his new book, "Free
Yourself From Pain" (Si-
mon and Schuster), written
ith Richard Trubo, Dr.
resler presents a complete
analysis of pain and its
treatments.
In the book, Dr. Bresler
details 35 self-help regi-
mens based on this philos-
ophy., which are drawn from
his own pioneering work at
UCLA. As in the Pain Con-
trol Unit, where patients
play a major role in develop-
ing their own programs,
these exercises call upon the
active participation of
patients in determining a
proper course of treatment.
"Free Yourself From
Pain" is designed to help
the reader identify the
cause of pain, evaluate
the alternatives for aid,
and, finally, mobilize the
hidden, internal re-
sources of the body for
recovery.
The success of Dr.
Bresler's techniques is
strikingly described in one
case study after another.
People with pain once
thought "incurable" have
learned to heal themselves
from within. In his six years
as director of the clinic, Dr.
Bresler claims that 70-80
percent of his patients have
recovered despite pessimis-
, tic prognoses by their origi-
nal doctors.
Dr. Bresler examines the
value of traditional medical
techniques such as drags,
surgery and psychotherapy,
and also shows how physical
therapies can help the
chronic-pain sufferer. De-
scribed as well are the bene-
fits obtained from a wide
array of unconventional
methods such as
acupuncture, hypnosis,
biofeedback training and
nutrition.
