Every conceivable aspect of art and literature affected by Marxism is covered in the 36 essays in the vol- uminous "Marxism and Art" (Wayne State Univer- sity Press). Historical and critical commentaries emphasize the interesting annotations about the contributing writers in the analyses by the editor of the volume, Maynard Solomon. Karl Kautsky, one of the authors of theessays in this volume, wrote on the sub- ject "Art and the Conception of God in Ancient Israel." The concluding lines in his essay are worth noting. He wrote: "Monotheism found easier acceptance among the Jews and Persians than among the mass of Egyp- tians, Babylonians or Hel- lenes; but the idea of monotheism had first to be developed by the philosophers of these more-advanced civiliza- tions." Maxim Gorki, Leon Tolstoy, Leon Trotsky, Nikolai Bukharin, Anatole Lunacharsky and other names recorded in Russian history are among the authors included in this im- portant work with its inter- pretive influences of Mar- xist thought on art and lit- erature.
