ROSTROPOVICH NEW YORK — Mstislav Rostropovich, world- renowned cellist and con- ductor of the National Sym- phony Orchestra of Wash- ington, D.C., will be hon- ored by the American Friends of Tel Aviv Univer- sity at a . dinner Oct. 14 at the Plaza Hotel in New York City. Maestro Rostropovich will be awarded an honor- ary doctorate by Tel Aviv University at the dinner. Leonard Bernstein and Zubin Mehta, the former and present conductors of the New York Philhar- monic Symphony Or- chestra, are serving as hon- orary co-chairmen of the dinner. A special guest at the event will be Benjamin Levich, the highest- ranking scientist ever permitted to emigrate from the Soviet Union. Rostropovich will be cited "for his illustrious career as an outstanding cellist and conductor, his contribution to musical education, his courage as a defender of human rights and freedom and his friendship for the Jewish people and the state of Israel." He has played with and conducted the Is- rael Philharmonic Or- chestra on numerous occa- sions. Born in Baku, Azerbaijan (USSR) 52 years ago, "Slava" Rostropovich was awarded the Lenin Prize and the highest honor in the country — "People's Artist of the USSR." Internationally known for his defense of artistic freedom, Rostropovich was informed by Soviet authorities, while on a 1974 concert tour in the West, that he would not be allowed to return to the Soviet Union. In 1977, when he was 50 years old, Rostropovich gave 60 benefit concerts around the world for char- ity. His wife is the soprano Galina Vishnevskaya.
