The em- phasis today is on dining out — the high point of socializ- ing. "A few couples get to- gether, a dozen phone calls are exchanged in order to choose a restaurant which pleases the palates of all concerned and atmosphere is next on the priority list. Once a dining spot is finally agreed on, the procedure is ususally dinner at 8, finished by 10, yawns at 10:15 and another confab on where to go now. "Unless you're a disco enthusiast or one who enjoys haunting the late night watering holes, your destination is generally home by 11 after taking a short ride. "But this wasn't so a couple of decades ago. The Wonder Bar on Saturday night was the place to be seen. The at- traction was dancing and a floor show. Dinners were probably better than adequate, but not memorable. The em- phasis was on having fun and not worrying about where to go after dessert. "The Statler Terrace Room was elegant. It brings back memories of Hil- degarde, of the deep throaty voice and long white gloves, who charmed the custom- ers. I remember the suave, continental Fred Brisson, stopping in the middle of a song to admonish a person who was busy munching a steak and ignoring the singer.
