In a television interview
he expressed deep concern
at the murder of Pierre
Goldman, the Jewish left-
wing leader who was prom-
inent in the May 1968 stu-
dent anti-government
demonstrations. Goldman,
who was linked to criminal
activities in the early 1970s,
was gunned down here last
week by three men, sus-
pected of being members of
a right-wing terrorist
group.
Last Friday some 5000
people gathered in the
square where Goldman was
killed and chanted anti-
fascist slogans.
Kaplan also' cited as
anti-Semitic actions the
spate of bomb attacks
against anti-Nazi per-
sonalities and shops
owned by Jews. Last
Saturday night a bomb
exploded in front of the
home of Col. (ret.) Jean
Legand who had slapped
former SS officer Otto
Skorzeny outside a tele-
vision studio on Feb. 42,
1975. Legand was not at
home when the bomb
exploded. Police found
Nazi slogans and signs on
a wall in the building
where he resides.
Sunday, a bomb explosion
destroyed a shop owned by
Jewish fashion designer
Daniel Hechter. There was
extensive property damage
but no one was hurt.

Hospital Explains Kosher Policy
Editor, The Jewish News:
I am writing with regard
to articles which have ap-
peared in your Aug. 24 and
Sept. 7 issues in which Mr.
Jack Kraizman, a recent
outpatient at the National
Jewish Hospital/National
Asthma Center, has indi-
cated that kosher food is not
available at NJH/NAC.
I want to emphasize that
kosher food is available to
any inpatient who desires it
at NJH/NAC. It is true that
our hospital does not have a
kosher kitchen. NJH/NAC
is a nonsectarian hospital,
and the number of patients
requiring kosher food re-
present a tiny fraction of our
total patient population.
The kosher food for these
few inpatients is obtained
by the hospital from within
the Denver community. In-
stalling, staffing and
operating a kosher kitchen
would be prohibitively ex-
pensive.
At a time when all hospi-
tal costs are being ques-
tioned, and when, adminis-
trators must be committed
to hold or reduce these costs
wherever possible, we can-
not justify the costs of a
kosher kitchen. This same
conclusion has been reached
by most of the Jewish-
CINCINNATI (JTA) —
Sheldon Benjamin, interim
chairman of the Coalition
for Alternatives in Jewish
Education (CAJE), said
that the report last month
that 40 Jewish teachers in
the Soviet Union had
formed a CAJE chapter re-
sulted from an impression
that may have been errone-
ously conveyed at a session
of the CAJE fourth annual
conference at Rutgers Uni-
versity in New Jersey.
Benjamin noted that
what was discussed was not
the formation of a chapter
comprising 40 Jewish
teachers, but that 40 Jewish
teachers were invited to be-
come honorary members of
CAJE and to attend the
CAJE conference Aug.
23-28.
The teachers, all refus-
niks, could not attend be-
cause they were not able to
get permission from Soviet
authorities.

Lack of Anger Condemned
Editor, The Jewish News:
In the aftermath of An-
drew Young's firing and the
effect it had on black-
Jewish relations, a number
of spokesmen for Jewish
organizations were quoted
in print or were interviewed
over the airwaves, about the
Jewish community's reac-
tion to the position taken by
the black leadership.
With very few exceptions,
I was shocked by the views
and sentiments expressed
by the various spokesmen.
One gentleman, when
asked whether the Jewish
community was angered by
the words and actions of the
black leaders, answered
that a better way to describe
it is "puzzled."
The reply to a question
whether this will have an
adverse effect on Jewish fi-
nancial contributions to
black causes was somewhat
to the effect "I would hope
not." Most of the other
comments I read and heard
were similar in tone and
contents.
When one speaks pub-
licly on a matter of such
vital importance, one ad-
dresses in effect, three
audiences: the blacks, the
public at large, and last
but not least the Jewish
community. It is the
likely perception of such
utterances by each of the
above groups that dis-
turbs me greatly.
To the blacks, this
mealy-mouthed reaction
clearly signaled that the
pernicious actions of many
of their leaders may be con-
tinued with impunity. The
general public had an
opportunity to reinforce its
stereotype view of a Galut
Jew, ingratiating and not
daring to show his indigna-
tion.
To be sure, the spokesmen
bore little resemblance to
the cringing Diaspora Jew.
Without exception they
were cultured and refined
gentlemen. There was little,
however, in their behavior
to distinguish them from
the "Mayofess" type Jew.
But it is the effect on the
Jewish community which
disturbs me most. The func-
tion of leadership is to ar-
ticulate ideas, galvanize
energies and direct the ef-
forts of the community. In
the context of the recent
events, it is- indeed an awe-
some responsibility.
Isolated and friendless,
we can only depend on
ourselves to face up to the
perils confronting Israel
and therefore all Jews.
This will require us, from
time to time, to give a
forceful expression to
our feeling of indignation
and anger.
As Justice Holmes put it
"Life is action and passion,"
and one is required to par-
take in the action and pas-
sion of one's time. Any
soothing utterances, re-
gardless how well moti-
vated, which tend to conceal
the true state of affairs, are
dangerous to the commu-
nity, by reducing its state of , •
agitation and lulling it into
a false sense of security."
The expressed views in
their essential char-
acteristics did not differ
from the calming pro-
nouncements of the Juden-
rats in the Ghettos of
Europe in time • of the
Holocaust. The latter, as we
all know, did not affect the
ultimate outcome, but de-
prived many of a final act of
dignity.
It is a mark of a truly free
person to react with anger ilk
when the occasion calls for./
it. Failure to do so, again in
Justice Holmes' words, will
cause us to be judged not to
have lived."
