Delta Air Lines Is Celebrating
50th Anniversary of Service

its 50th anniversary this
year and the following
article salutes one of
Anierica's major air car-
riers.)
Nothing was the same
after Lindbergh. Financiers
woke up suddenly to realize
that airplans had flown
from European battlefields
to emerge with potent prom-
ise as a factor in transporta-
tion. Airplanes could carry
people! They might be pro-
fitable.
Securities were mar-
keted, airlines were born,
and the airlines ordered
bigger and faster airplanes.
Cow pastures were paved
into runways, and the city
without an "air field" be-
came hardly a city at all.
By the early summer of
1929, the airplanes of four
airlines whizzed in and out
of a former plains area,
paved over near Dallas,
Texas and called "Love
Field." In June of that year,
another airline landed at
"Love Field."
Everybody during the
1920's knew that airlines
were started because
somebody had convinced
a banker somewhere that
profits could really be
made by flying people in
airplanes. But who would
have believed that boll

House Backs
Syrian Jewry

WASHINGTON (JTA) —
The House last week
adopted without dissent a
resolution calling on the
government of Syria to
allow Jews who wish to
emigrate to depart without
restriction.
The resolution said the
request is based on
humanitarian grounds. The
resolution now goes to the
Senate for action.
The measure was intro-
duced by Rep. Stephen Sol-
arz (D-N.Y.) under suspen-
sion of House rules, a step
which requires two-thirds of
the House to approve for
passage. With no dissent,
the measure was adopted as
offered.
