Columnist Rips Black-PLO Talks

In the Sept. 2 edition of
the Detroit News, columnist
Michael Novak berated
American black leaders for
making contacts with the
Palestine Liberation
Organization.
In a sharp denunciation of
the PLO, Novack listed a
number of reasons why no
one should negotiate with
the terrorist organization,
including its thousands of
terrorist atrocities and its
lack of a peaceful program.
He berated the black
leaders for not calling for
rights and self-
determination for other
ethnic groups such as Lat-
vians, Lithuanians, Poles
and other dominated by the
Soviets.
Novack wrote: "It is
impossible for me to be-
lieve that Andrew Young
and his colleagues are

not following classic lines
in making Jews victims
of their frustration at
Young's resignation from
government. It has hap-
pened before."
Novack concluded:
"Some Palestinians do
suffer from injustice, and a
better solution than the
present one must be found.
Israel has agreed. But not
all the burden should fall on
Israel. Outside forces that
support the PLO do not
help.
"Since 1945, more Jews
have been driven from Arab
lands than Palestinians
from Israel. More Palesti-
nians now live in Israel
than Jews in .Arab lands. To
force all Palestinians into
the hands of the PLO is to
force history backwards. It
is not a humane program.

Pressure on EEC to Extend
Recognition to the PLO

LONDON (JTA) — When
the foreign ministers of the
European Economic Com-
munity (EEC) met in Dub-
lin they were under heavy
pressure to extend political
recognition to the Pales-
tinine Liberation Organiza-
tion as a rightful partner in
Middle East peace talks.
But despite a pro-PLO
shift by the British govern-
ment, Israeli diplomats
think there is a chance that
the move will be defeated
because of the opposition of
West Germany and Hol-
land.
Israeli optimism about
the attitudes of West Ger-
many grea following the
talks in Bonn between Is-
raeli Foreign Minister
Moshe Dayan and his West
German counterpart,
Hans-Dietrich Genscher.
There have also been
talks in Dublin between
Israeli diplomats and
Irish ministers, including
Foreign Minister Michael
O'Kennedy.
Relations between the
two countries have been
exacerbated by Israeli mili-
tary action in south Leba-
non where 700 Irish troops
serve with the United Na-
tions force.
Last week, O'Kennedy
told Israeli Charge d'Af-
faires Yoav Biran of his
"grave concern" over Israeli
policy in Lebanon. He asked
Israel to restrain the Chris-
tian forces led by Maj. Saad
Haddad from encroaching

on land controlled by the
Irish troops. On the same
day, a similar attack on Is-
rael was made at the United
Nations by Irish represen-
tative Paul Keating.
The Israeli Embassy in
London, which handles
relations with Ireland,
was so concerned by the
mood in Dublin that it
asked the foreign minis-
try in Jerusalem for addi-
tional help in putting the
Israeli case before the
Irish government and
public.
Eitan Ron, Deputy Direc-
tor General in charge of
United Nations Affairs and
a senior officer of the Israeli
army's northern command,
is in Dublin to meet officials
and journalists.

Joint Sponsors

0.
YOUNGSTOWN,
(JTA) — The Hillel Student
Center at Kent State Uni-
versity is believed to be the
only Hillel center sponsored
by five Jewish com-
munities. The Jewish fed-
erations of Akron, Canton,
Cleveland and Youngstown
and the Kent Jewish com-
munity sponsor the center.

In 1939, the British
White Paper limited Jewish
immigration to Palestine to
10,000 per year for five
years, plus a total of 25,000
refugees from Nazism dur-
ing the same period.

Weizmann Scientists Create
Cancer-Detecting Scanner

REHOVOT — An in-
strument based on an
entirely new approach to
detecting suspicious masses
in the breast has been de-
veloped at the Weizmann
Institute of Science in Re-
hovot.
The computerized device
— called a dielectric breast
scanner — is based on the
principle that electric fields
polarize pathological tissue
in the breast differently
than they do normal tissue.

The scanner, which itself
presents no accompanying
health haard, provides doc-
tors with an instant TV
image of these irregular and
possibly cancerous regions.

According to Dr. Bruce
Sollish and Prof. Ephraim
Frei, the Rehovot scientists
most closely involved with
the project, doctors still-lack
a definitive, safe method for
early detection of breast
cancers.

"It is not in the interest
of human rights or of the
United States to em-
power the PLO. The
ii
is a puppet organizaon,
hostile to Israel's exist-
ence, and the servant of
distant powers. In sup-
porting the PLO, black
leaders discredit them-
selves, injure national
unity, and jeopardize the
security of all of us.
"From Martin Luther
King, Jr. to Yasir Arafat is
off a precipice."

Urge Cult Limits

MIAMI BEACH — Rabbi
Rubin R. Dobin, national
chairman of the "Jews for
Jews" organization, has
called on state legislatures •
and the Congress to enact
laws regulating and limit-
ing the methods of recruit-
ment and influence of cult
groups.
