Your article on the Shores send- ing gefilte fish to their kids in San Diego, really hit home. For the last four years when we have gone out to visit our son Jonathan and our daughter-in-law Pamela, the two grandmas, Ruth Halberg and Esther Levy, spend a couple of weeks, Grandma Ruth making gefilte fish and cookies, Nana (Levy) making eggplant, sour cream twists, cake, etc. The box weighs 20-25 pounds packed with the goodies and of course I cook soup, matzo balls, etc. the month we visit. "However, when brother Charles went, Jonathan said to me long distance, "Mom, you've cooked, but haven't really baked for us all these years." So mom baked 10 dozen chocolate chip cookies and made homemade studel and Chuck took them out. "Jonathan called with a deal. He would pay for all ingredients parcel post and even pay me minimum wage $2.90 an hour (sweet kid) if I would send a care package once a month. However, Pamela said, `Mother, if you love me, don't. I have put on four pounds in 10 days from your sweets." "Maybe we ought to form a parents' group with kids living in San Diego and whoever is going, schlep the care packages. By the way, my Joe had to go to Zeman's and buy chala and pumper- nickle bread because from home it tastes better. But love is really a 76- year-old and an 80-year-old grandma standing and cooking and baking." —Diane Halberg GROUP NOW MAK- ING its debut at Top of the Pontch, a lively foursome of musicians-singers called the L.A.
