She once met a Jewish girl and gave the girl her documents telling of her gentile background, in order to save her life. Such an act was like inflicting the death sentence on herself. Maria was not frightened. After she had done it, she saw only one aim, to save the maximum number of Jews she could. How did the 22-year- old Maria meet the ac- tress Miriam Niva? It was in 1944, when the Nazis occupied Hungary. She saw in the room of the Jewish doctor a child, the daughter of Laszlo and Maryes Kothy. she thought: let me save their child. Maria took the child to her village. She told her neighbors that she had found her in Budapest after an air attack in which the parents of the child perished. Later, when the mother visited her child in the vil- lage, Maria introduced her as a gypsy who had lost her way. She also brought Dr. Kothy to the village. Maria's father knew the secret and helped his daughter to hide the Jewish family. He found a hiding place for them in a vine- yard. Life was difficult and dangerous. One had to change the hiding place from time to time. The Germans searched the vil- lage thoroughly. The neighbors suspected some- thing. Maria had to provide food for the Jewish family. Her life and that of her old father were endangered daily. When Maria was asked whether she was afraid, she answered: Who had time to be afraid?" Miriam told her often that she and her family could not demand such a sacrifice from Maria. If something will happen to her because of her sac- rifice, "I shall go with you," she said _ . Once German soldiers entered Maria's house, one of them put a revolver to her head and shouted: "You are hiding partisans." Only her coolness saved her from death. The Germans took everything that was in the house and left. In February 1945, Budapest was freed. Maria started to work in a factory. She kept contact with all people she had saved, among them Miriam Niva. Maria's daughter is like a sister to Miriam's daughter Anne, who is living in Swit- zerland. When Maria was asked whether she would again help to rescue Jews, she an- swered that she could not live with a clean conscience, if she did not save people. Maria does not under- stand why her humanitarian action should be celebrated and why she was awarded a medal for it. A tree was planted in the name of her father at the Herzl Forest in Jerusalem. The sister of Miriam Niva,Itoza Nordil, who lives in Condon, wrote to her sister that owing to Maria's help, she and dozens of other Jews are alive. Maria Alt had also saved small chil- dren by bringing them to a hospital in Budapest.
