who has come under fire in
the Knesset for reducing the
sentence of an Israeli parat-
roop officer convicted of
murdering four Lebanese
civilians when Israel oc-
cupied South Lebanon last
year.
Eitan stated flatly in
newspaper interviews that
he has no intention of quit-
ting despite demands by
MK Uri Avneri of the Shelli
faction for his resignation.
A petition in support of
Eitan was circulated bear-
ing hundreds of signatures
of students and paratroop-
ers. Nevertheless, Avneri
said that if Eitan refuses to
resign, Shelli would de-
mand the appointment of a
judicial investigating corn-
mittee to find out whey
Eitan reduced the sentence
of 24 year-old former Lt.
Daniel Pinto from eight to
two years.
Avneri denied that he
was in any way responsi-
ble for foreign news-
paper reports published
over the weekend de-
scribing the evidence
that led to Pinto's convic-
tion. Those facts had
been withheld from the
Israeli public by military
censorship.

confirmation of the details
of the crime in which Pinto
and two as yet unidentified
enlisted men allegedly tor-
tured and then killed the
four civilians in Ein Baal
village in March 1978.
Eitan issued a statement
reiterating that he had ac-
cepted the court's guilty
verdict, but stood by his de-
cision to reduce Pinto's sen-
tence on grounds that the of-
ficer had faced a dangerous
situation to which he over-
reacted.
Avneri has charged that
Eitan sought to minimize
Pinto's crime although he
was aware of the gruesome
details.
Maariv published a let-
ter from a Jerusalem
mayor who had defended
one of the soldiers on evi-
dence .supplied by a fel-
low officer who was him-
self found guilty of loot-
ing and stealing arms
during the Lebanese op-
eration and was sen-
tenced to a year in prison
and reduced in rank. The
officer was subsequently
pardoned by the area
commander.
But the defense lawyer
contended that his tes-
timony in the Pinto case
was unreliable since the
witness' relations with the
defendant were unfriendly,
the case also has political
implications.
Gen. (Res) Mattityahu
Peleld, a member of Shelli,
charged that Chief of Staff
Eitan unnecessarily in-
jected himself into political
issues.
He cited Eitan's support
for West Bank settlements
and his acceptance of the
Gush Emunim settlers as
part of the regional defense
system. Herut MK Itzhak
Livni retorted that the at-

Ontario Autopsy
Agreement OKd

NEW YORK (JTA) — A
spokesman for Agudath Is-
rael of America has re-
ported that its Toronto
branch reached an agree-
ment to protect the rights of
observant Jews in medical-
legal autopsies and the
routine removal from bodies
of the pituitary gland.
The agreement was
reached at a meeting of four
Toronto Orthodox rabbis,
with Roy McMurtry, On-
tario solicitor general;
Member of Parliament
David Rotenberg; and Dr.
H.B. Cotnam, Ontario chief
coroner.
The meeting was ar-
ranged to discuss the impli-
cations of recently passed
Ontario legislation calling
for removal of the pituitary
gland during a coroner's au-
topsy, the spokesman said.
Rabbi Shlomo Noach Man-
del, chairman of the com-
mission on legislation and
civic action of the Toronto
Agudath Israel, who headed
the rabbinical delegation,
noted that according to
Jewish religious law, any
alteration in a corpse, such
as during an autopsy, or by
removal of an organ, is a de-
secration of the dead.
