made the claim in a broad-
cast from its radio station in
Beirut.
The blast occurred at 6:45
p.m. local time. The dead
person was not immediately
identified. Six victims were
seriously injured, 17 sus-
tained lesser injuries and
the rest light injuries. Most
of the victims were rushed
to Shaare Zedek Hospital.
Ben-Yehuda St., a main
shopping center, is a narrow
thoroughfare. According to
police the explosive charge
was concealed in the wheels
of a bicycle parked in an
area reserved for pedest-
rians and was apparently
set to detonate at a time
when it would cause
maximum civilian casual-
ties.
Hundreds of customers
were leaving the shops
along the mall which
close at 7 p.m. and other
crowds were lining up for
the first show at one of
the many movie houses in
the vicity.
Many people raced to the
area after the explosion to
render assistance but suc-
ceeded only in blocking am-
bulances and other
emergency vehicles rushing
to the scene. Only a short
while before the blast,
police were investigating a
number of suspicious-
looking objects on a side
street about 60 feet away.
After the explosion, police
combed the area for addi-
tional explosives and found
a second bomb which was
safely dismantled.

WASHINGTON (JTA) —
The United States, Egypt
and Israel reached a solu-
tion Wednesday for a
peacekeeping force in the
Sinai to monitor the with-
drawal of the Israeli milit-
ary in accordance with the
Egyptian-Israeli peace tre-
aty.
Secretary of State Cyrus
Vance, Egyptian Defense
Minister Hassan Ali and Is-
raeli Foreign Minister
Moshe Dayan made the an-
nouncement after two days
of discussions in
Washington.
The agreement is subject
to approval by the Egyptian
and Israeli governments

Israeli Seeks
Data on Relatives

Neville Mandel of Israel
is in the U.S. looking for
relatives whose surnames
are Mandel and Planover.
In a letter to The Jewish
News, Mandel explained:
"My father's family —
Mandel — came from the
Lechovich area in the
`Minsk Gubernya' of czarist
Russia. My great-
grandfather was called
Joshua Myer Mandel, and
he ran an inn, probably in a
village called Vedjma, near
Lechovich.
"My grandfather, Ab-
raham (born in
Lechovich in 1871), mar-
ried in Baranovich, also
nearby, and went to Scot-
land with his family in
1908 or so. He had a
brother, Yosef, whose
offspring, and other
members of the family,
are probably in America.
My
maternal
grandmother was Pearl
Planover, daughter of
Yehuda and Faige
Planover. She grew up in
Liverpool, England, but her
parents came from Bes-
sarabia. The name Planover
is so rare that I should be
interested to hear from any-
one bearing it whose
forebears came from Bes-
sarabia or Romania in gen-
eral."
Persons with information
about Mandel's relatives
should write him at 444 E.
86th St., New York, 10028.

and Vance said that in the
case of the U.S., the Presi-
dent and Congress.
The three leaders out-
lined in general terms
that the force will be
made up of Egyptian and
Israeli military elements,
with the U.S. civilian
monitors now in place in
the Sinai as a surveil-
lance group to partici-
pate with them. Unless
the United Nations Sec--
urity Council goes along
with this proposal, it was
understood, the UN will
not have representatives
in the peacekeeping
force. The agreement is
essentially that reached
by Premier Menahem
Begin and Egyptian Pres-
ident Anwar Sadat in
Haifa earlier this month,
plus the new element of
American participation.
Opening the news confer-
ence, Vance said that the
U.S. will carry out its role
through the 200 civilians
already in the Sinai at the
electronic listening posts.
U.S. aerial reconnaissance
will continue with an in-
crease in the aerial force.

In 1948, the total Jewish
population for Egypt, Libya,
Iraq, Syria, Lebanon,
Yemen, South Yemen,
Tunisia, Morocco and
Algeria was approximately
926,000. As of 1978, the
Jewish population of these
Arab states is believed to
have shrunk to approx-
imately 34,000.

HONOLULU (JTA) —
The Hawaii Jewish Welfare
Fund has authorized a spe-
cial fund-raising appeal on
behalf of the boat people
who have found safety in
this state. Fund president
Mort Feldman appointed
Dean Jerrold Michael as
chairman of the appeal.
In an address to the trus-
tees, Michael pointed out
that many parallels exist
between the boat people and
"our Jewish boat people of
1937-1939."
As a result of the decision
to launch the appeal, 195
responses have been re-
ceived totalling more than
$6,700. Preliminary meet-
ings have been held with
Indochinese volunteer relief
agencies.
