BUILD A
STRONG ISRAEL

NEW YORK — The
United Synagogue of
As we enter the year 5740, I send from Jerusalem to America (Conservative) is
Jewish communities everywhere the traditional blessing of sponsoring conferences for
youth advisers and youth
"Ktiva vahatima tova" — a good inscription and sealing.
5740 dawns upon a troubled world, disturbed in its directors this fall in Wash-
economic and political functioning. Not least storiny are the ington, D.C., St. Paul,
conditions in and about our homeland, Israel, and they Minn. and Rochester, N.Y.
The Rochester and Wash-
require both our vigilance and our activitiy.
Yet, at the same time, within the complex of Israel's
present situation there is a new hope for the emergence of
peace, and there are the constant factors of the determination
and creativity of our people in Israel and the attachment and
aid of those outside.
For what do we hope in 5740?
For satisfactory development of the peace negotiations
with Egypt and extension of their approach to other sectors of
the Middle East.
For a greater measure of success in closing the social
gap in Israel and effectively guiding its economy.
For emphasis in all communities on Jewish education
and on the ties that bind us to each other and to our people's
Center in Israel.
For a vigorous and idealistic movement of olim to Israel
from all the corners of our dispersion.
For the strength and wisdom to persevere in building a
society and a culture that will truly revive the Jewish people,
its heritage, and the Land with which it is forever bound.
To all the house of Israel I send my hopes for "bodily
health and inspiration from above."

A VERY HAPPY
NEW YEAR

.
If the tradition of including the Jewish
National Fund in the Will of every Jew were
invariably followed, sufficient resources would
,be accumulated to ensure the future of the
young Jewish State on a sound basis of land
development, social welfare, and justice.

A bequest to the Jewish National Fund
should be as traditional as having a Blue Box
in one's home.

Hasid Murdered in Old City

JERUSALEM (JTA) —
The Palestine Liberation
Organization has claimed
responsibility for the mur-
der of Moshe Yoskovitz
early Sunday near the
Church of Gethsemane in
the Old City. The PLO
claimed that he was mur-
dered because he was a
member of the Gush
Emunim.
Yoskovitz, 47, of Bnei
Brak was buried in the
MO- unt of Olives cemetery,
not far from where he was
fatally shot at close range.
Yoskovitz, a Gerre Hasid,
arrived in Jerusalem Fri-
day with his daughter and

son-in-law to say selihot
(penitential prayers) at the
Gerre Synagogue in the Old
City. On Saturday night he
was in the synagogue for
prayer services while his
daughter and son-in-law
drove to the Mount of
Olives, not far from the
synagogue and the church,
to visit the grave of the
Gerre Rebbe.
They returned to the
car but the engine stalled
and they left it there and
proceeded to walk back
to the synagogue. Shortly
after mid-night all three-
returned to the car in an
effort to get it started.
When it failed to do so,
Yoskovitz' s son-in-law
and daughter left to
summon a tow truck
while Yoskovitz stayed
with the car.
Before 1 a.m., residents
who live nearby heard two
shots from the street fol-
lowed by the screams of a
man: "No,. no." They im-
mediately summoned the
police, who found Yoskovitz
on the sidewalk. He was
rushed to Hadassah Hospi-
tal where he later died.
The security forces im-
mediately placed road
blocks in the area and con-
ducted a wide manhunt.
The area, just outside the
southern Lions Gate to the
Old City, is known to be
dangerous. A few yards
from the scene of Sunday's
- crime, a reserve soldier, Av-
raham Deutsch, was mur-
dered last year while stand-
ing alone near the Rockefel-
ler Museum.
