THE DETROIT JEWISH NEWS 46 Friday, September 14, 1919 Settlement Decision Is Delayed Amid Sharon-Yadin Argument chairman of the Ministerial Committee on Settlements, had misled the government on the new settlements. Yadin, a member of the committee, said last week that Sharon had used the government's earlier deci- sion to only "thicken" exist- ing settlements for the pre- sent as a means of establish- ing the new settlements. He said Sharon used the names of existing settlements such as Karnei Shomron and Rehan and added a "Bet" to them to make it appear they were the second stage of the settlement rather than a new one. The committee acted after Premier Menahem Begin, at an earlier meet- ing with Yadin, rejected his demand that the mat- The committee also agreed to alloW Defense Minister Ezer Weizman to appeal the decision to estab- lish the settlements before the Knesset Foreign Affairs and Security Committee. At the same time, the committee rejected a charge by Yadin that Agriculture Minister Ariel Sharon, JERUSALEM (JTA) — The Ministerial Defense Committee agreed Sunday to a demand by Deputy Premier Yigael Yadin and the two other Democratic party ministers that the Cabinet review the decision to establish four new set- tlements in Judaea and Samaria. A joint statement re- leased by the Anti- Defamation League of Bnai Brith, the American Jewish Committee and the Synagogue Council of America, including the interreligious affairs de- partment of the Union of American Hebrew Congre- gations, expressed regret that the NCC's executive committee upheld "Young's position "without demand- ing that, as a precondition, the PLO abandon its cove- nant which specifically calls for the destruction of Israel" and ceases its "self- confessed acts of terrorism against innocent civilians throughout the world." "The failure of the execu- tive committee of the NCC to demand the cessation of these acts and the rejection of the notorious PLO cove- nant is to avoid the moral issue that religious organ- izations must not evade," the joint statement said. "The representatives of America's largest group- ing of Protestant and Or- thodox churches have failed to face the moral and religious issue un- derlying America's no- talk policy with the-ler- rorist Palestine Libera- tion Organization." The NCC's executive committee paid special tribute to Young on the oc- casion of his resignation as the chief U.S. delegate to the UN, "surrounded by is- sues in the Middle East con- flict which have been the special concern of the NC- CUSA for many years." Consistent with his belief that dialogue is indispensa- ble to peace, he challenged the United States and Israel to desist from their no-talk policy with the Palestine Liberation Organization, while, at the same time, challenging those nations hostile to Israel to have good relations with it. He also underscored the futility of a continued policy of mutual violence. A quite similar position has been expressed by the NCC over the years."
