SO MANY FINE things
have been said about the
Vineyards on Frankin Rd.
and Northwestern that
added superlatives would be
strict redundancy . . .
What can be said, however,
is that it has gotten better
than before.
This is saying a lot be-
cause it has always been
among the prime dining
spots of our town . . . Under
its new owners, Richard
Roberts and Janet
Johnston, who opened just
about every food operation
owned by the late Ben
Kasle, and the new decor
that does much to enhance
its comforting beauty, the
elegance and graciousness
that have always been
trademarks at the Vine-
yards never left.
Much remodeling has
been done . . . however re-
taining the look of class . . .
From the moment one
enters the Vineyards and is
greeted by smiling, very
pleasant hostesses Jessica
Rayburn and Rhonda Han-
chett, and taken to a table or
booth, an aura of charm
oozes from the atmosphere
. . softly lighted crystal
chandeliers, padded walls,
tablecloths and napkins
. . . and a very well-trained
staff of employees . . . On
each table is a lovely, fresh
red carnation.
Evening chef Frank
O'Donnell has been at the
Vineyards eight years
. . . Day chef David
Borowiec, in charge of
the Vineyards prep work,
is a graduate of the Culi-
nary Institute of
America.
My waitress for the eve-
ning, Rita Sorensen, is
among the best . . . polite,
efficient, most attentive
. . . and smiling . . . She
had returned after two
years away . . . having
worked a year at the Vine-

Annex (now Benny's Disco.)
Rita brought me a won-
derful bowl of split pea soup
. . . made by David . .
and among the best I've had
. . . the strict taste of peas
and not a tinge of saltiness
or "doctored" flavor . . . It
is served at the table from a
tureen . . . and few people
refuse seconds.
After a cool, crisp salad
and then sides of scalloped
potatoes and fresh broccoli
amondine, came the eve-
ning's star . . . a truly great
entree . . . Roulades of
Veal . . . sliced veal stuffed
with a rice dressing in a
medium brown and bur-
gundy sauce . . . Frank was
superb with this dish . . .
and from the way others I
knew who were dining there
spoke, he does a masterful
job of all culinary delights.
Throwing caution to
the wind insofar as any
diet is concerned (thank
Heavens it isn't neces-
sary with me), I just had
to have the dessert
everyone is raving about
. . . Apples Bignets . .
warm, thinly sliced
apples fried in a special
Vineyard's batter . .
and topped with a slice of
Haagen Dazs ice cream.
Jim Cavasina, handsome,
suave, debonair and most
gracious, is the very knowl-
edgeable manager with
John Gingilowski, who was
on vacation when I was
there.
Former owner Fred
Graczyk was proud of the
Vineyards . . . So was Ben
. . . Richard and Janet
have retained the tradi-
tional pride both owners
sought to maintain.
It is indeed a prideful de-
light to dine at the Vine-
yards.
GREAT DANE on
Northwestern Hwy. has
been sold . . . also Palom-
bo's Monk's Cellar on 12 .
Mile and Orchard Lake Rd.
. . . and Spiro's on Green-
field and Lincoln . . .
McInerney's on Northwest-
ern, north of 12 Mile, has
closed its doors.
GOOD WAITRESS
DEPT. . . . Linda Cullen
at Clock Restaurant on
Southfield and 10 Mile . . .
smiling, very polite.
BERNICE SEGAL
writes about her and three
other people (husband
Henry, and Kathie and
Manny Foner) going to
Ciro's on Cass Lake Rd.. . .
"All four had excellent fish
dinners" says Bernice . . .
two cods, one stuffed floun-
der and one broiled trout
. . . Manny told his brother
Ezra Foner about Ciro's
. . . and h_ e came back rav-
ing about the veal . . . "The
prices are so reasonable,
too," says Bernice.
