time, it was announced by
Amiram Sivan, director
general of the treasury.
Sivan presented the esti-
mated short-fall for the fis-
cal year beginning Oct. 1 to
Sam Hart, economic attache
at the U.S. Embassy.
In Washington, Israeli
Ambassador Ephraim
Evron submitted the figures
to Secretary of State Cyrus
Vance. It is nearly double
the amount in U.S. military
credits and economic assis-
tance alloted to Israel for
the fiscal year beginning
this Oct. 1.
Sivan stressed that Is-
rael was not asking for a
specific sum, but was
presenting the U.S. with
its economic needs. The
U.S. should consider the
possibly serious implica-
tions if it decides not to
cover Israel's economic
deficits, he said.
In Washington, Israel
Embassy spokesman Avi
Pazner said the $3.4 billion
included $1.85 . billion in
military aid and $1.2 billion
in economic assistance. He
said the military requests
would be discussed in detail
when Defense Minister
Ezer Weizman confers with
Pentagon officials later this
week.)
(Egypt's Vice President
Hosni Mubarak also visited
Vance reportedly with a re-
quest for vastly increased
U.S. economic and military
assistance to his country.
Egypt was granted $L5 bil-
lion in military credits over
three years following the
signing of its peace treaty
with Israel last March 2.
However, President Anwar
Sadat is said to be seeking
sums ranging from $5-10
billion over a period of sev-
eral years.)

in gold at his disposal.
Hirschmann says his
greatest success was in get-
ting 50,000 Jews out of
Romania.
In 1944, he met the
Romanian ambassador
to Turkey, Alexandre
Cretzianu, in the woods
outside Ankara. The war
was drawing to an end,
the Soviet Army was ad-
vancing and Hirschmann
offered a deal.
The bargain was that
Cretzianu would help get
Jews out of Romania — on
Turkish boats, with many
going to Palestine — in re-
turn for visas to the U.S. for
him, his wife and two chil-
dren.
Both sides kept the bar-
gain.
