Lubavitch Movement Acquires Labor Zionist Institute

(Continued from Page 1)
The Jewish News learned
that the purchase of the
Labor Zionist Institute is on
a cash basis. The purchase
price is $480,000. Some
$70,000 was already paid in
when the earlier agreement
was reached for Chabad to
use the facilities for its
school. The cash fund is
being provided as loans by
ardent Chabad supporters,
in a movement headed by
Irwin Cohn, Jack
Shenkman, Emma Schaver,
Charles Feinberg, Gerald
Pollack, Jerome Pershin,
Sam Seltzer, Fred Cherrin
and a number of others.
As sole possessors of the
building, the Lubavitch
leaders plan enlargement of

Sadat Visit
Creates Problem

HAIFA (JTA) — While
Egyptian President Anwar
Sadat's visit to Israel ran
smoothly for the most part,
one segment of it turned out
not to be kosher — his food.
The mashgiakh, who
supervises kashrut at the
Dan Carmel Hotel where
Sadat stayed, was shocked
when he spotted the Egyp-
tian president's personal
cook in the kitchen prepar-
ing one of Sadat's favorite
dishes — mutton. The meat
was brought from Egypt
and thus not kosher.
The mashgiakh was faced
with a dilemma since the
meat would be placed on
hotel dishes which were
being used for the two ban-
quets given for Sadat. He
could have declared both
dinners treifah. But first he
checked with the head of the
Haifa kashrut department,
who in turn consulted the
city's two chief rabbis.
Their solution was that
the dishes used by Sadat
would not be used by the
hotel any longer. Everyone
was happy, including the
Egyptian cook who could
take the dishes back to
Egypt with him as
souvenirs.

and David Hermelin.
The Lubavitch organ-
Ization first began to use
the facility in 1971 under
a partnership-rental
agreement with the
Labor Zionist Alliance. A
few classrooms were
used by the small
Lubavitch school and
other meeting rooms
were utilized by their var-
ious youth programs and
college student activities.

The growing school
created a problem of needed
expansion space. In 1976,
Rabbi Meilech Silberberg,
head of Cong. Bais Chabad
of West Bloomfield, founded
a _ congregational
afternoon-school in the
building. Rabbi Silberberg's
institution doubled its
enrollment for three suc-
cessive years. Currently,
the school — a Yiddish-
speaking, Torah-study
