Jogging Through Israel

By JANET MENDELSOHN

World Zionist
Press Service

Jogging through Israel's
winding mountainous paths
or along the sandy shores of
the Mediterranean, the
swift-footed runner covers
paths that have been travel-
led by the children of Israel
since the days of Abraham.
Through highways, byways
and no ways, the Israeli jog-
ger has his choice of where
and how to head out to the
open road.
Although Israelis have
been wandering through
their land for thousands of
years, shorts and running
shoes have quickened the
pace to a brisk jog. Even
though the sport has not yet
achieved the popularity it
enjoys in other parts of the
world, interest is gathering
as government workers,
taxi drivers, yeshiva stu-
dents, professors, and
tourists — male and female,
young and old — are dash-
ing through town and coun-
try — just for fun.
For the runner that pre-
fers a flat sprint on the
springy beach sand, the
yediterranean offers the
wide expanse of its beaches.
Eliahu Comay is one of the
many that have jogged on
the beach for years, away
from the crowds of Tel Aviv.
At 47, he is considered a
"master" of the sport, and
recently finished second in
the European Cham-
pionship of Veteran
Athletes in Italy.
Like most joggers,
Comay is not, interested
in competition as much
as he is in running itself.
In his daily 20 kilometer
workout, the first 10 are

run for enjoyment and
health. The second 10
kilometers help him in
training for the annual
Sea of Galilee Interna.
tional Marathon in De-
cember.
History follows close on
the heels of all Israeli run-
ners. One of tour guide
Shraga Hecht's favorite
trails winds him over 20
kilometers from his home in
western Jerusalem to the
outskirts of Bethlehem. As
the suburbs of the city dis-
appear in the dust, Shraga
enjoys the mountainous
desert which has changed
little in thousands of years.
In addition to making
sure his tourists enjoy the
spectacular sites of Israel,
Shraga tries also to give
them a run for their money.
Very few of them can com-
pete with this fleet-footed
runner when he dashes up
the snake path winding up
the fortress of Masada.
At least one innovative
Israeli has tried to give
tourists a big runaround.
Richard Wolfe, 21, may
be a newcomer .to the
travel industry, but he
recently organized jog-
gers' tours of the Holy
Land.
So jogging in Israel is
making progress; two years
ago, an independent ath-
letic organization to pro-
mote jogging was initiated.
Entitled "Ayalot" (the He-
brew word for the slender
swift-running gazelles of
the desert), the club strives
to increase the popularity of
the sport and includes run-
ners from the northern bor-
der -town of Kiryat Shmona
to Eilat, the gateway to

Sinai.
