Due for Teacher Institute
"Teaching About God in a
Godless World" will be the
theme of the fourth annual
city-wide teachers' institute
sponsored by the Jewish
Educators Council of Met-
ropolitan Detroit 9 a.m.
Sunday at Temple Beth El.
Participating in the insti-
tute will be more than 200
teachers representing the
- Jewish schools of Metropoli-
tan Detroit, Flint and Ann
Arbor.
Dr. Samuel Shafler,
rabbi, educator, historian,
and superintendent of tfie
Board of Jewish Education
of Metropolitan Chicago,
will be the keynote speaker.
He is a lecturer, author
and vice president of the
-1, National Council for
\– Jewish Education; hon-
orary president of the
New York Metropolitan
Council of the Rabbinical
Assembly; and a member
of the executive commit-
tee of the National Con-
ference of Jewish Com-
munal Service. .
Following Dr. Shafler's
presentation, teachers will
attend a variety of seminars
and workshops on teaching
the role of God in: Jewish
history, the Holocaust,
prayer, death and evil, Bi-

has been named the
spiritual leader of Temple
Beth Jacob, Pontiac.
Rabbi Weiss has served
congregations in West
Hempstead, N.Y.; Chicago;
Barrington, R.I.; and Little
Neck, N.Y.
He earned a BA degree
from the University of
Chicago and a BHL degree
from Hebrew Union College
in Cincinnati. Rabbi Weiss
has been a counselor,
teacher and youth leader.
