Aside from receiving the

BOrn in Poland, Laker
moved to Windsor in 1922
and peddled fish for a living.
In 1924, he moved to Detroit
and worked as a delivery
man for a wiping cloth com-
pany.
Laker promised custom-
ers that the firm would
launder specialty items,
such as aprons. When the
firm refused, Laker and his
wife did them, and from
there the business grew.
Begun in 1938, the Ace
Wiping Cloth Co. grew
from six employees to
more than 300 today.
About 10 percent of the
plant's employees are
physically or mentally
handicapped.
Non-supervisory person-
nel are members of Teams-
ter's Local 285 or the AFL-
CIO Laundry Workers
Union, Local 129.
In 1970, the company
merged with Sanitex Wiper
Co., whose owner, Lou Parr,
remains vice president of
Ace. Since that time, the
company has acquired 14
wiping cloth companies, in-
cluding one in Cleveland.
The company produces
wiping cloths — common
rags — from old clothes,
sells. and launders them.
The $15-million-a-year
business also sells and rents
shop towels, uniforms,
overalls, gloves, mops and
mats.
The average monthly
wash load is 800,000
pounds, washed with
30,000 pounds of deter-
gent, 2,000 gallons of
chlorine bleach and one
million gallons of water,
for which the company
pays $7,000 a month. The
monthly gas bill is
$12,000.
Ace uses biodegradable
detergents, and a $500,000
waste water treatment
plant is under construction.
For reservations to the
dinner, chaired by Max
Nosanchuk, call Israel
Bonds, 557-2900.
