Blind Students Are Learning Judo to Aid Self-Confidence

From Israel Digest
JERUSALEM — Blind
students in Jerusalem are
learning how to cope with
their disability through
judo.
"Judo is an ideal sport for
the blind. It inspires physi-
cal, and psychological self-
confidence, and most impor-
tant, it teaches a person how
to fall correctly," says Yosef
Lev, director of sports at the
Jewish Institute for the
Blind 'and a black belt in
judo himself.
One of the blind man's
fears whether he realizes
it or not — is the fear of fal-
ling or stumbling over an

unexpected obstacle," says
Lev. "A fall occurs in-
stantly, and an untrained
person is unable to make
the immediate decision as to
how he should fall safely."
Lev notes that a person
trained in judo, however,
can react instantane-
ously in such a situation.
Through an almost
natural instinct, he will
maintain bodily control
while lessening tension
and thus cushion his fall.
In addition to protecting a
person from injury, Lev also
insists that judo develops
bodily control and coordina-
tion. "When taught cor-

rectly, judo is both an excel-
lent physical as well as edu-
cational discipline," he
notes.
Lev has worked tirelessly
to develop judo as a vital
tool to be used in the total
education of the blind in Is-
rael and throughout the
world. It is through his in-
itiative that Jerusalem's
Jewish Institute for the
Blind now has an active
judo program for students
aged 6-18.
Evening lessons in the
sports center also enable

We have a feeling that Is-

us. In fact, according to oci..
lady scientist in.Jerusalem,
the energy is already there
waiting for us, but it is dif-
fused in the sunlight. What
we have to do is to concen-
trate it and she proposes to
concentrate herself the next
three years on ways to con-
centrate the too diffused
sunlight.
We have faith in her.
Anyone who spends
three years concentrat-
ing on any subject is sure
to produce results. Con-
centration is a kind of
supreme energy in itself
and like the sun is avail-
able to all of us free.
It was said of Einstein
that he had only two ideas
in his life but he concen-
trated on them and revolu-
tionized much of our scien-
tific thinking. ,
What is thinking itself
but concentrated attention.
Our language deceives us.
We speak of bright people
and dull people, but the
bright one is simply one who
concentrates more. There is
no difference in their think-
ing apparatus. One simply
gives attention to a subject,
which means he concen-
trates — and the other
doesn't.
We admire people who
have learned several lan-
guages, but every child
learns a language without
going to, college or taking a
course — without any'
teacher. It simply concen-
trates on what it hears
around it. It is not conscious
that it is concentrating, but
it is. It is paying attention,
focussing its mind and that
is concentration. The mind
is a kind of technological
gadget itself and when used,
produces results, like any
machine.
The state of Israel is an
instance of the power of
concentration. A state is
a form of concentration.
The Jews disperse('
among the nations are fa
more numerous than in
Israel, but in Israel they
constitute a majority and
with the power of state-
hood have means of fo-
cussing attention. The
state of Israel is far more
powerful as a bulwark
for Jews than the. arger
dispersed Jewish popu-
lation outside. The three
million Jews of Israel
have been able by this
power of concentration
to withstand a half dozen
enemy nations.
