Volume on Felix Adler, Ethical Culture Is Scholarl

(Continued from Page 10)
of a new religion which
would be the next logical
step beyond Reform
Judaism, and become the
religion of the contempor-
ary world.
It was to be a religion
based on natural science,
social science and the pre-
vailing ideals of progress
and universality. He was
eager to found a religion
which was not to be just a
Jewish religion but a reli-
gion of mankind; no more a
religion bound by creeds or
rituals, like Judaism or
Christianity, but a creed-
less religion based on moral
deeds alone, "Deeds not
Creeds," was to be the motto
of the new religion. This
religion would be the final
fulfillment of the vision of
the Hebrew Prophets: "Let
justice flow like water and
righteousness like a peren-
nial spring." (Amos V-24)
Their vision fulfilled,
the prophets and the
Bible could fade into an
honored past. The new
religion of humanity
would require no dog-
ma, indeed no God, but
only a dedication to ethi-
cal principles and prac-
tices which would keep
improving the conditions
of human life. "Ethical
Culture" alone could
satisfy the spiritual needs

of contemporary human
kind.
This was the theme of the
first and the last sermon the
youthful Rabbi Adler deliv-
ered from the pulpit of Tem-
ple Emanuel. It was the
last, because his doctrine of
Ethical Culture met with
immediate resistance, both
from the governing board
and the membership of the
Reform congregation. It
turned out that Reform
Judaism, for all its moder-
nity and progressivism was
nevertheless committed to
the perpetuation of Judaism
rather than to the cultiva-
tion of a vague visionary
universalism agnosticist.
Denied the pulpit of Tem-
ple Emanuel, the zealous
young Adler resorted to
"hiring a hall." He was a
great orator and a hand-
some figure of a man.
His sharp criticism of
religious creeds-and rituals,
and his eloquent espousal of
solutions to current social
problems made him the
most popular lecturer in
New York and gave him a
national reputation. Such a
dramatic phenomenon as he
represented is fully worthy
of such a scholarly and ab-
sorbing biography as Kraut
has written to give the life
and vision of Adler its pro-
per place in' history.
Yet, it is my feeling that
the author overestimates
the importance of Adler.
For it turns out that the
crowds Adler drew in the
various halls where he
lectured were Jewish
crowds. The non-Jewish
world was totally un-
moved by his proclama-
tion of a new religion for
"all peoples."
The Society for Ethical
Culture which he estab-
lished turns out to be
mainly a Jewish society. It
is engaged in some projects
of social service which are
commendable, but hardly of
universal significance. In
New York City it conducts
an excellent school attended
mainly by rich Jewish chil-
dren whose parents can af-
ford to pay the costly fees of
a private school.
While this was certainly
not Adler's intent, Ethical
Culture has become one of
the several easy ways by
which some righ Jews man-
age to escape the burdens of
Jewish life. If you are a
member of Ethical Culture
then you are not on the
target list of the United
Jewish Appeal.
Adler's dream was some-
thing that could emerge
only in the 1870's. If he was
graduated from a university
only 10 years later, he could
not have conceived it or sus-
tained it. The Russian pog-
roms of the closing years of
the 19th Century aroused
the Jewish spirit and
strengthened the Jewish
consciousness of people-
hood.
In the atmosphere of
the 20th Century, with its
world wars, with the
Holocaust, and with the
establishment of the
Jewish state, such a
movement as that of
Adler is totally irrele-

vant. The current paral-
lels to Adlerism, the
minuscule temples of so
called Humanistic
Judaism are composed of
some Jewish college
graduates who became
atheists during their first
course in natural science
in their sophomore year.
These 20th Century
sophomores have neverthe-
less felt the need for Jewish
identity, so they invented
for their convenience that

In place of our usual travel advertisement, we wish to use this occasion to
remind you of these words spoken just three years ago.

"The PLO is not the group to deal with in solving the Palestinian
problem. The PLO is an alliance of guerilla organizations, not a
government in exile. The PLO is unrepresentative of the Palestin-
ian problem. The PLO should not participate as an equal partner in
any resumed Geneva peace conference, because the PLO's
stated aims are diametrically opposed to any peace which
envisions the continued existence of Israel."
Jimmy Carter
October 18, 1976

In light of the present policy of the State Dept., its double-talk diplomacy, and
its envoys of intrigue. We would do well to remember these words.
