John Bull in a particularly
attractive light. In the war
against Nazi Germany,
writes the author, Britain
turned a deaf ear to the
agonized cries of millions of
Jews. The doors of Palestine
were sealed tight against
so-called illegal Jewish
immigrants and indeed, the
first shot fired by British
soldiers in World War II was
against a ship carrying
these "illegal" immigrants.
I happened to be in Pales-
tine at this time and then
wrote a little piece which
casts a sidelight on one as-
pect of this british policy:
Did you ever wake up on a
bright morning to find out
suddenly that your best
friend was going to get mar-
ried that day to someone
whose name he had not even
mentioned before?
The skies were beauti-
fully blue. Yes, it was a
fine time to get married, if
you had the girl, the in-
clination and so on. But
there had been no prep-
aration for this. Herb
seemed about the same
type of congenial
bachelor as I and
moreover, I knew he was
not keeping company
with any particular girl
at the time. So you can
understand my' reaction
when he knocked on my
door in the morning and
said "How about coming
down with me this morn-
ing to my wedding?"
I looked at him. There
was a smile on his face. He
began to sing, If I forget
the, 0 Zion."
I waited until he stopped
singing. "Are you going to
get married," I said, "before
or after lunch?"
"After lunch," he said.
"Good," I said. "Doctors
advise against marrying on
an empty stomach and be-
sides it shows you are not
hurrying things. As they
say, haste makes waste."
But, happening to look at
his feet, I said, "Better shine
your shoes or your bride will
turn you down."
"Any bride," he said,
"does not give a hoot
about my shoes. She'll
marry me if I am
barefoot. All she wants is
this ring," and with that,
Herb took out a ring.
He never had a ring be-
fore. There was something
serious in all of this, I
realized. "Who is the bride?"
I asked
"Come along with me and
see," he said. "I don't know
her myself yet. I have never
seen her."
"So it's going to be love at
first sight," I said.
"Oh boy, is she going to
love to see me," he said. "If
you ever marry, your bride
should be as happy."
Well, to make a long
story short, Herb asked
me to go with him in the
morning to the Dead Sea
for a little swim. Maybe, I
thought, Herb needs to
invigorate himself for the
wedding ordeal and after
returning to Jerusalem,
Herb took a little nap and
then asked me to join him
visiting the bride.

CONGREGATION BETH ACHIM
We walked up a street
with hard cobblestones and
then we came across an old
stone building with bars
across the windows.
"That's where by bride
is," said Herb. "That's a
jail," I said. "I know," he
said.
We went in and entered
the warden's office and
Herb asked if we can see
Rivke Hazan.
The warden beconed to an
attendant, who led us down
the line of barred cells,
there she was, he said, after
a while.
We could see Rivke be-
hind the bars. "Are you
Rivke," Herb asked. "Ken,"
she said, which is Hebrew
for "Yes." "I am your cha-
san," Herb said.
Rivke smiled more. "It's
very nice of you," she said.
"Shmooel wrote me you
were coming. I have been
dreaming about you."
"Oh, it's nothing," said
Herb. "Nothing at all. I
am glad to do it, but I
think we have better get
busy." He took out the
ring and she put her hand
through the bars. "Be-
hold," said Herb, "I con-
secrate thee unto me ac-
cording to the laws of
Moses and Israel." Herb
and the bride smiled.
"Mazel tov," I said.
"Maybe," said Herb turn-
ing to me, "you want to get
married?" "There are some
very nice girls here," said
Rivke.
"Oh some other time," I
said.
Well, that was it. It was
really all very simple. The
Jewish girls were all ar-
rested for having entered
Palestine illegally and they
now faced deportation, but
if they were the wives of
residents of Palestine, they
could not be deported. So the
Jerusalem jail, I was told,
was now a favorite place for
wedding simhot.
