I

Or

Editor, The Jewish News:
The Aug-. 24 issue of The
Jewish News contained two
items which I feel are di-
rectly related to each other.
The first was the front page
statement by Jewish lead-
ers Marian Shifman and
George_ Zeltzer, the second
item was a letter from
Michelle Rosenberg-
Newman.
The Shifman-Zeltzer
statement called for Jews to
, keep "cool" and maintain
temperance and under-
standing after the Andrew
Young affair. The
Rosenberg-Newman letter
expresses shock that the
young writer was the only
person to walk out of the
U-M commencement ad-
dress by Jesse Jackson in
which • he assailed the
Jewish people.
The Detroit Jewish
leaders are telling us to
keep "cool" against insults
from Jackson or anyone else
who attacks Jews. The
Jewish youth 'today look at
the Jewish ',establishment"
for leadership and find only
fear of reprisals and
willingness to accept insults
from anti-Semites of what-
ever color.
Rosenberg-
Ms.
Newman's generation
hears these "cool" mes-
sages and they become
completely "cold" to
Judaism. I don't blame
them. One hundred years
ago the Jewish as-
similationist Judah Gor-
don advised, "be a Jew at
home and a man on the
street." The American

Jewish leadership has
always abided by that
statement of shame.
We are losing a whole
generation of -young Jews
because of that attitude.
Judaism is a religion of
moral action, the kind of ac-
tion of two Jewish boys
named Goodman and
Schwerner who lost more
than a job in the fight for
human rights 20 years ago.

ow every saver
can collect First Federal's
super interest.

5 1/2% interest on regular savings.

First Federal now pays 5 1/2% per year daily interest,
paid and compounded quarterly on regular savings.
One-quarter percent more than any bank is permitted
to pay on an annual interest rate basis. And you can
add or withdraw any amount anytime you choose.

New Four-Year Money Market Certificate.

This new account offers a high interest rate never
before possible on a deposit of $100 or more. The
interest rate on this account is based On a U.S.
Treasury Securities index and is established
monthly. However, the rate in effect when your
certificate is issued is guaranteed for the
full four-year term. August's rate for
this account is 7.950% annual interest,
compounded continuously for an effective
annual yield of 8.394%.

Reduced certificate account
minimum deposits.

Until recently, you needed $1,000
in most First Federal certificate
to
savings accounts. Now the minimum
for certificates issued after July 1, 1979,
has been reduced to $100 or more on
all of our certificate savings plans
(except our popular 182-Day Money
Market Certificate which pays even
higher rates on deposits of $10,000
or more).

MISS KRAJDEN

Mr. and Mrs. Morris
Krajden of Detroit an-
nounce the engagement of
their daughter, Fay, to
g Lawrence Philip Kritzer,
son of Mr. and Mrs. Sanford
'WO Kritzer of Oak Park.
Miss Krajden was
graduated from Wayne
State University with a BA
degree in education. Her
fiance attended WSU.
A December wedding is
planned.

If a mother smokes dur-
ing pregnancy, she in-
creases the risk of miscar-
raige, fetal distress, prema-
ture birth, and low birth-
weight, says the March of
Dimes. Low birthweight is
twice as common when a
mother smokes during
pregnancy than among
non-smokers.

Modified early withdrawal
penalties.

The interest penalty for early withdrawal on
certificate accounts issued after July 1, 1979, has
been modified for savers who may need to with-
draw their funds before maturity. On our One-Year
Certificate and our 182-Day Money Market
Certificate, the penalty is no more than 90 days'
interest. On longer term certificates, the
maximum penalty is 180 days' interest.
Four more reasons why it's better than
ever to save at First Federal.
