Alan Cranston of California as guest speaker. The dinner will pay trib- ute to Morris and Pearl Lieberman for their nearly 50 years of leadership on behalf of the Labor Zionist Movement." Lieberman, an attorney helped to organize many Zionist and commu- nity groups for the support of Israel. He is vice president of AMPAL (American Israel Corp.), chairman of the Midwest Region of Histad- rut and of the Histadrut Foundation. He is chairman of the Labor Zionist Al- liance Midwest Region and serves on the board and executive committee of the national organization. ALAN CRANSTON chairman of the board of trustees of the Labor Zionist Institute and a member of the board of trustees of the JeWish Vocational Service. He is past president and executive vice president of the Detroit Zionist Federa- tion. He served for many years on the executive board of the Jewish Welfare Federation and was the first president of the Detroit Metropolitan Chapter of the American Jewish Congress. Born in Macon, Ga., Mrs. Lieberman is a graduate of Windsor Collegiate. She also holds a degree in music from the Toronto Conser- vatory. She attended Wayne State University and is an accredited teacher. Mrs. Lieberman's father, Max Chafets was one of the founders of the Poale - Zion Movement in, Russia. The Chafets family has always been active in efforts on be- half of Labor Zionism. Mrs. Lieberman has been active with her husband in the Labor Zionist movement and has been chairman of the Histadrut Campaign for Pioneer Women. Sen. Cranston is serv- ing his second term in the Senate, and is the Senate Majority Whip. He began his career as a journalist with the International News Services (now UPI) and served as a foreign correspondent in England, Germany, Italy, and Ethopia from 1936 to 1938. The following year, he wrote an expose of Hit- ler's "Mein Kampf." Dur- ing World War II he served in the infantry and later became an editor of "Army Talk." He has been national president of United World Federalists and president of the California Democratic Council. Sen. Cranston has been a consistent advocate of effec- tive arms control and reduc- tion and limiting nuclear proliferation. He is a cham- pion of environmental pro- tectionists and has helped to institute the new Congres- sional system for tighter budgetary controls on gov- ernment spending and taxes. New impetus is given to the planning for the tes- timonial dinner in the recognition to be accorded also to Mrs. Lieberman. For 50 years, an active associate of the Pioneer Women, Mrs. Lieberman shared her hus- band's role in the Labor Zionist movement as a vol- unteer in fund-raising for Histadrut and in many of his trips to Israel, including attendance at World Zionist Congresses. Proceeds will benefit the youth training school of Urim in the Carmel Hills which will be named in honor of the couple, the Morris and Pearl Lieber- man Dormitory.
