Masaryk and the death of
Czechoslovakia.
Those headlines now
have an ominous echo in the
repeated and relentless
pressures being put by
President Carter on Prime
Minister Begin and the
state of Israel.
The signing of the
Israeli-Egyptian peace
treaty is only the beginning
of the peace process. Many
issues remain to be re-
solved. In those, as before,
President Carter and his
Administration will con-
tinue their relentless pres-
sures on Israel.
To pressure the Arabs
would be difficult and
take courage. They have
large populations and oil.
Israel is small and has no
oil. Moreover, it is heavily
dependant on American
aid.
To pressure Israel is
therefore easy and takes no
courage at all. So the ghost
of Czechoslovakia will con-
tinue to hover over the Mid-
dle East as long as Jimmy
Carter is our occupant of the
White House.

Apathy Protested.
Editor, The Jewish News:
As a member of the
August graduating class of
the University of Michigan
at Ann Arbor, I was appal-
led at the apathy of the
other Jewish graduates in
attendance at commence-
ment. How could they con-
tinue listening to the Rev.
Jesse Jackson's tirade
against the Jewish people,
and for the PLO.
I was the only one in cap
and gown who walked out in
protest.
I thought we had learned
not to sit by silently when
our people are verbally at-
tacked and maligned. That
is how it begins!
