24 Friday, August 24, 1979 THE DETROIT JEWISH NEWS Lebanese Man Held in Shooting of PLO Leader ADAT SHALOM GENEVA — A 22-year- old Lebanese man was ar- rested here Tuesday on sus- picion of having assassi- nated Zuheir Mohsen, chief of military operations of the Palestine Liberation Organization, in France last month. _ The Justice Ministry said the suspect, Mohsen Jaroudi, was picked up for questioning Monday and was later arrested at the re- quest of the French authorities. Mohsen died on July 26, a day after being shot in the head as he was entering his apartment in Cannes. Ac- cording to some reports, he was the victim of a feud be- tween Palestinian factions. Others said Iraq was re- sponsible—The PLO accused Israeli and Egyptian agents. France has requested the extradition of Jaroudi, but if he denies the charges, the Swiss cabinet may have to decide whether to extradite him. CALL: Synagogue 548-9000, Robert Roth 968-8452 Shcharansky Lawyer Ousted While Senators in USSR MONTREAL (JTA) — Irwin Cotler, a McGill Uni- versity professor who attended a political science congress in Moscow last week, reported that he was ousted from the Soviet Union and he flew to Lon- don on a Japanese Airline flight. Cotler, who is the ap- pointed lawyer of the Shcharansky family and has prepared a 900-page brief in defense of Anatoly Shcharansky, the Jewish prisoner of conscience, met while in Moscow with numerous refusniks and paid a visit to Prof. Andrei Sakharov, the Nobel Prize scientist. Cotler said that all his re- quests for an interview with Soviet officials were re- jected. Cotler was on his way to a Moscow suburb in the company of refusnik Prof. Alexander Lerner to congratulate Shcharans- ky's parents, who were celebrating their 50th wed- ding anniversary with a one-day hunger strike in protest against the treat- ment of their son, when the car they were in was stop- ped by the police. Lerner was arrested and Cotler was told that he had to immediately leave the Soviet Union. In Jerusalem, Secretary of State Cyrus Vance tele- phoned Avital Shcharansky, wife of Shcharansky, at her home in Israel to let her know that the United States is aware of her husband's deteriorat- ing health. Vance reportedly told her that the American Embassy in Moscow has expressed concern to Soviet authorities. He promised Mrs. Shcharansky that as soon as the Soviet authorities respond, he would let her know. (On Wednesday, Soviet authorities denied reports that Shcharansky's health is failing.) Meanwhile, U.S. Senator Carl Levin (D-Mich.) said that he will attempt to meet with Russian refusniks dur- ing his visit this week to the Soviet Union. Sen. Levin and five other senators went to the Soviet Union, England and Belgium to discuss the SALT II Treaty, the possibili :ies of a SALT III agreem ant and other military mat- ters with allied officials and Soviet leaders. Accompanying Sen. Levin and Mrs. Levin are: Sens. Joseph R. Biden, Jr., chairman of European Af- fairs subcommittee of the Senate Committee on Foreign Relations; David Boren (D-Okla.); Bill Brad- ley (D-N.J.), Richard Lugar (R-Ind.) and David - Pryor (D-Ark.).
