After Solomon's death, his
son lost control, and Egyp-
tian Pharoah Shishak took
advantage of the disunity to
invade Palestine and de-
stroy the belt of settle-
ments.
After that, the Negev was
virtually empty until the
Roman-Byzantine period
when under control of the

Nabateans, the desert
region enjoyed its greatest
degree of prosperity ever in
antiquity. Like the rest of
Palestine, the 7th Century
Arab conquest resulted in
massive population de-
crease, since the center of
the newly-emerging Mos-
lem empire was in Damas-
cus, further north.
Because of poor water
and soil conditions, the
southern Negev was
never as populated as its
northern counterpart.
Thus, the survey is ex-
pected to yield more sites
