Mrs. Mellen Noted for Devotion
to Job Jewish Causes Family

Esther Mellen, a medical
technologist, who, with her
husband shared a devotion
to cultural causes and a
deep interest in Israel, died
Aug. 14 at age 67.
A native of New York,
Mrs. Mellen attended
Wayne State University
and was chief medical
technologist at Grace Hos-
pital from 1930 to 1940,
where she trained many
oth---s in her field.

preident of the Women's
Auxiliary of the
Maimonides Medical
Society and a member of the
Sinai Hospital Guild. She
also was active in the
Jewish Welfare Federation
Women's Division.
Her many interests in-
cluded civic duties as
well as the Jewish and Is-
raeli causes. She was

She accompanied her
husband on several im-
portant missions to Is-
rael.
"Her interests were
human and steeped in
Jewish devotions," her hus-
band said. "She was a factor
in the medical profession
and a dedicated wife and a
dedicated inspirer of her
family, while giving of her-
self fully to the commu-
nity."
Besides her husband, Dr.
Hyman Mellen, Mrs. Mel-.
len leaves a son, Dr. John; a
daughter, Mrs. Melvyn (Di-
ane) Rubenfire; two sisters,
Mrs. Isadore (Sophie)

Meyer Silverman, foun-
der of Tomboy Supermar-
kets in Detroit, died Aug. 11
at age 76.
Born in Russia, Mr. Sil-
verman lived 70 years in
Detroit. He founded his four
stores in 1949, sold the
business in 1970 and re-
tired.
He was an honorary
member of Detroit Silver-
man Post 135 of the Jewish
War Veterans, founder and
organizer of the Gold Star
Parents of the JWV — par-
ents who had sons killed in
World War II — and was a
past president of the East
Side Civic Merchants Asso-
ciation. He resided at 30311
Hunters Dr., Farmington
Hills.
Mr. Silverman leaves his
wife, Celia; two
grandchildren and three
great-grandchildren.

Morris Levenson

Dearest

Morris Levenson, co-
owner of Independent
Wallpaper and Paint Co. in
Detroit died Aug. 11 at age
79.
Born in Poland, Mr.
Levenson was in business
for 55 years. He made fre-
quent donations of paint
and wallpaper to all reli-
gious groups and especially
to churches in his area. He
was a member of the
Mezeritcher Aid Society,
the Zionist Organization of
Detroit and Cong. Shaarey
Zedek. He also helped bring
to the U.S. children or-
phaned by the Holocaust.
He resided at 14151 Ludlow
Pl. Oak Park.
NIL Levenson leaves a
son, Cyril; a daughter, Mrs.
Irving (Dorothy) Dunn; 12
grandchildren and one
great-grandson.

Aug. 8 at age 82.
Born in Newark, N.J.,
Mr. Zendel lived 62 years in
Detroit prior to retiring to
North Miami Beach, Fla., a
year ago. He was a member
of Temple Israel and Perfec-
tion Lodge of the Masons.
He leaves his wife, Vera;
a son, Lee of Rochester; a
daughter, Mrs. David
(Geraldine) Ronis of Silver
Spring, Md.; three brothers,
Leo of Laguna Beach, Calif.,
Manny of Rockport, Ind.,
and Gus of Oak Park; a sis-
ter, Mrs. William (Frances)
Segal of North Miami Be-
ach; and eight
grandchildren. Interment
Detroit.

ALICE GORDON,
former Detroiter of Califor-
nia, died Aug. 11. She
leaves a son, Harry M. of
Bloomfield Hills; a daugh-
ter, Mrs. 'Stanley (Judy)
Holtzman of Westlake,
Calif.; nine grandchildren

grandchildren. Interment
