The High Holy Days of Rosh Hashana and Yom Kippur have provided the occasion for active participation of Or- thodox, Conservative and Reform congrega- tions in the Israel Bond program since its incep- tion in 1951. Israel Bonds are the prin- cipal source of funds for the development of the coun- try's industry and agricul- ture, the exploitation of natural resources, construc- tion of highways, housing and harbors, and the crea- tion of jobs for newcomers. Since the first Bond issue inaugurated in the United States in 1951, the sale of Bonds has exceeded $4.3 bil- lion. Recently the Sixth De- velopment Issue of $1 bil- lion was made available in the free world. * * * Beth Achim Cites Lakers on Behalf of Israel Bonds Cong. Beth Achim, in cooperation with State of Is- rael Bonds, will honor Harry and Sarah Laker of Southfield "in tribute to their loyalty and support to the synagogue and the Jewish institutions of the community." The Lakers will be the recipients of the State of Israel's Lion of Judah Peace Award at the congregation's Annual Is- rael Bond Dinner, to be held 7:15 p.m. Sept. 13 at the synagogue. Cocktails will be served at 6:30 p.m. Max Nosanchuk is dinner chairman. Born in Russia, Mrs. Laker emigrated to Detroit 53 years ago. She is a member of the Order of the Eastern Star and has been a member of the Pinsker Pro- gressive Aid Society for al- most 50 years. Like Mrs. Laker, her hus- band has contributed al- most a half century of serv- ice to Pinsker, and has held every office in the organiza- tion, including numerous terms as president. During World War II, the Lakers were appointed Pinsker's co-chairmen for U.S. Sav- ings Bonds sales, ultimately selling over $1.5 million in U.S. Bonds. The U.S. gov- ernment honored them for this achievement by nam - ing a Mustang fighter plane for the Pinsker organiza- tion. The couple were desig- nated Pinsker's "Couple of the Year" in 1974. Laker, who was born in Poland and immigrated to Canada, spending six years there before mov- ing to the United States, is an active member of many other organiza- tions and has received several honorary awards for his contributions and services. He has served on the board of the Hebrew Be- nevolent Society for 35 years. He is former worship- ful master of Blue Lodge Masonic Order of the Craftsman Lodge 521, a 32nd, degree Mason, a member of the Scottish Rite Consistory Bodies, a noble in the Shriners of Moslem Temple and a member of the Crescent Shrine Club, the Boulevard Shrine Club and the Order of the Eastern Star.
