The Best of Everything)

available on many salad
buffet tables, and you have
a whole meal.
"For a change of pace and
taste, I recommend the
hearty Colossal Sal qd at the
Pickle Barrel in the Ever-
green Shopping •Plaza. It
comes in two sizes, big and
small, but they're both am-
ple. Ingredients are
Julienne of turkey, corned
beef, Swiss cheese, hard
boiled eggs and tomatoes on
crisp greens, all in generous
portions. Don't forget to bite
into the crunchy pickles, all
you can eat. You won't be
able to stop after only one.
"Salad buffs give rave
notices to Healthy Jones on
Northwestern and 12 Mile.
Alfalfa sprouts and mush-
rooms with natural herbs
add something different and
nutritious to greens. This
unique eatery eliminates
all chemicals and is heavy
on natural foods .. .
"We've enjoyed munch-
ing granola, nuts, nachos,
doritos in guacamole dip
and whole wheat pizza
crust with cheese. Other
favorites are a variety of
quiches, crepes with feta
cheese, spinach and
mushrooms, Ruben
sandwiches minus the
corned beef, frothy fruit
drinks with yogurt and
colorful vegetable bever-
ages as foamy as milk
shakes, minus the
calories. Everything is
served magnificently and
deliciously, according to
well-filled and well-
satisfied customers.
"If you like diminutive
eating spots for intimate
dining, the Cozy Corner on
Grand River and Far-
mington Rd. fills the bill.
The little restaurant oc-
cupies the corner of a bank.
There's room for five on bar
stools and a few more
around three tables. We
found the quiche with ba-
con, cheese, mushrooms and
spinach excellent. A nice
added touch is fresh fruit on
the dinner plates. The food
is reasonable in this small,
cozy cafe.
"The Whistle Stop in
Birmingham is another
small restaurant which
serves good lunches. The
home-made bread makes
every sandwich a treat and
it's hard to resist the home-
baked blueberry 'cheese
cake and cream pies. The
price is right and we suggest
you make it an early lunch
to avoid waiting in line.
"For elegant dining in
still another little restau-
rant, try Cortina's on 10
Mile between Middlebelt
and Orchard Lake Rd. the
zesty Italian cuisine is
enhanced by white table
cloths, chandeliers and a
fireplace. I enjoyed the
eggplant parmigiana and
the salad, both in healthy
portions. The wine is fine
and the harder stuff, mixed
or on the rocks, has just the
right kick for even the most
discriminating imbibers.
"We've often com-
mented that despite infla-
tion and recession, it

.

seems more and more
people eat out. On Satur-
day nights, you're lucky
if the restaurant you've
been dying to try takes
reservations. In some
better dining spots, a
reservation still means
waiting in line or stand-
ing knee deep at the bar
until your name is finally
called.
"Eating out Saturday
night has become" a tradi-
tional social event for many
couples. But as a waiter at
Lelli's once told us, the serv-
ice and even the food is bet-
ter on week nights when the
chef is less harried and can
do justice to the preparation
of a meal. Waiters aren't
rushed during the week and
can give diners the special
attention they enjoy. After
all, people dine out to be
waited on as well as for a
change of menu.
"Families eat out for a
variety of reasons. Wives
who work and those who are
`household engineers' need
a break. After a hard day at
the office or at home
entertaining the kids,
women want to avoid pre-
paring a meal and relax
over dinner in a different
atmosphere. The place
doesn't have to be fancy,
especially if the children
come along.
"A cheeseburger and
French fries beats having
to cook and for many
wives and mothers, even
a fast food place has more
ambience than their
kitchens. Men are usually
more reluctant to eat out
and claim they'd rather
have eggs or tuna fish at
home where they can slip
out of their clothes into a
dry martini and unwind.
But judging from the
number of families fre-
quenting restaurants,
women's lib is still alive
and well.
