WASHINGTON --- The
Jewish War Veterans of the
U.S.A. recently elected
Harris B. Stone of Alexan-
dria, Va., as the national
commander.
Stone has served JWV in
many capacities, including
past chairman of the na-
tional board of inquiry, vice
chairman of the national
executive committee, na-
tional public affairs com-
mittee and 10 years as a na-
tional executive commit-
teeman. He is a past post
commander and quarter-
master and past depart-
ment commander of the Dis-
trict of Coluinbia.
He also has served for two
years as chairman of the na-
tional personnel committee,
nine years as chairman of
the national resolutions
committee, chairman of the
national foreign affairs
committee, chairman of the
JWV Task Force on the Fu-
ture, national supply offi-
cer, national civil rights
officer and member of the
national constitution and
by-laws committee.

Yiddish Concert in Oak Park
The Workmen's Circle
J.T. Zuckerman Culture
Fund, the Jewish Commu-
nity Council and the
Shalem Aleichem Institute
in co-operation with the city
of Oak Park will sponsor a
Yiddish concert 2 p.m. Aug.
26 at Oak Park Major Park.
In case of rain. the concert
will be held 2 p.m. Sept. 2 at
the park.
The concert will feature
Eric Rosenow and his Con-
tinentals, Cantor Shabtai -
Ackerman of Cong. Beth
Abraham Hillel Moses and
Cantor Joseph Barenholtz.
A native of Berlin,
Rosenow studied at the
Sterns Conservatory there
and later emigrated to
Shanghai, where he re-
mained until his arrival in
the U.S. in 1948. He formed
a band, which performed
throughout the U.S. and
Canada for more than 25
years. He is past president
of the Einstein Lodge of
Bnai Brith and is vice
president of Shaarit Hap-
laytah.
Cantor Ackerman was
trained in Kishinev. At
age 16 he officiated at the
Great Synagogue of
Kishinev. During World
War II, he was wounded
by the Nazis and in 1945,
while a refugee in Russia,
chanted services in the
Great Moscow
Synagogue.
After the war he was ap-
pointed cantor of the
Ahavas Achim congrega-
tion in Bucharest. When
Russia occupied Romania,
Cantor Ackerman and his
family went to Israel, where
he was named cantor of
Cong. Beth El and later be-
came the' cantor at the
Great Synagogue of Tel
Aviv. Following a nation-
wide tour of the U.S. in
1955, he was appointed can-
tor at Cong. Beth Abraham
and is currently the cantor
at Cong. Beth Abraham
Hillel Moses.
Born in Poland, Cantor
Barenholtz took his canto-
rial training in his home-
land. He was a soloist in
synagogue choirs 'as a child.
In 1945, he went to Ger-
many where he studied
opera until 1947, when he
emigrated to the U.S. He
had advance musical train-
ing at--the Detroit Conser-
vatory of Music and was the
former cantor at Cong. Beth
Aaron and Cong. Beth
Achim.
Edwin Shifrin, chairman
of the Michigan Workmen's
Circle District Committee,
will be master of ceremonies
and translate the songs.
The public is invited free
of charge. Persons attend-
ing the concert are re-
quested to bring chairs.
