Dayan's Threat
Opens Crossing
TEL AVIV (JTA) — Thir-
teen Gaza Strip students re-
turned home from Egypt for
their summer vacations last
week and became the first
group to cross into Gaza
from Egypt without the aid
of a third party.
The crossing took place
after Foreign Minister
Moshe Dayan said he would
resign if the Cabinet agreed
to Egypt's request that the
crossing be conducted by the
International Red Cross. He
said with the Israeli-
Egyptian peace treaty, bor-
der crossings should now be
handled between the two
countries without the need
of the Red Cross or United
Nations personnel.
The students crossed
through the El Arish
checkpoint with only Israel
and Egyptian officers deal-
ing with the matter.

Scion of Menuhin Family Traces Roots,
Defends Three Musicians' Israel Interest
Lionel Menuhin Rolfe,
son of Yalta Menuhin,
nephew of Yehudi and
Hephzibah Menuhin, set
out to seek his roots. He
found them in Chabad, the
Lubavitcher Hasidim.
Therefore his book, The
Menuhins — A Family
Odyssey" (Panjandrum
Books) is more the story of
the Lubavitch than any-
thing else. It does, however,
glorify his uncle, take price
in the musical genius of his
mother and aunt, both pro-
ficient pianists, and is an
expression of high regard
for the uncle, the world
famous violinist, and the
mother and aunt who com-
plete a trio of greatness in
the musical world.
The author of this book
proves his worth as a news-
paperman in this product
about his family. He has de-
voted himself to thorough
research about matters re-
lated to his family, the
Lubavitch and Israel — and
in his efforts to be factual.
He certainly succeeds in
these respects.
What Rolfe fails to do is
to show the anti-Zionism,
the bitter hatred that has
made his grandfather,
Moshe Menuhin, one of
the vilest exponents of
anti-Israelism.
The Menuhins" is an ex-
citing story about a family
of geniuses. Even the
Grandfather Moshe, who
was called a Jewish anti-
Semite, who was raised in
Zionism and became an
enemy of Israel and the
Zionist cause, is depicted as
a man of many talents.
Yehudi is the primary
idol of the family biog-
rapher and his sisters
Hephzibah and Yalta are
similarly admired.
The story is filled with ac-
counts of the family disrup-

Rolfe reveals that his
attention is attached. He
was raised in a tradi- grandfather publicly de-

Rolfe does not hide the
platform in the Nazi press.
He didn't have much liking facts, especially when he

Histadrut Hits $60 Million
NEW YORK — The Is-
rael Histadrut Foundation,
which helps support the
network of health, welfare
and educational institu-
tions of the Histadrut in Is-
rael, has announced that it
has reached a milestone of
$60 million in its cumula-
tive total of long-term com-
mitments through its de-
ferred giving programs.
Dr. Sol Stein, national
IHF president, announced
that 1979-1980 has been
designated as the "Sixty
Million Dollar Year" of the
Israel Histadrut Founda-
tion in American with a
goal of $70 million to be

tadrut in Israel.
Dr. Stein warned that the
galloping rate of inflation in
Israel and the economic dis-
tress now felt in many sec-
tors of the economy made it
imperative to continue the
flow of capital to Israel
through the IHF.
Maine Senator
Has Strong
Jewish Ties
NEW' YORK — Sen.
William S. Cohen (R-
Maine) is a staunch suppor-
ter of Israel. His father is
Jewish and the Senator was
brought up in the Jewish
faith, but was not Bar
Mitzva because he did not
convert.
The Senator is now a
member of the Unitarian-
Universalist Church.
Sen. Cohen's father oper-
ates the only Jewish bakery
in central Maine.
The Senator and his wife
recently visited Israel as
part of a trip sponsored by
the Jewish Federation
Community Council of
Southern Maine.

Menuhins as a family
while the condemnation
of Grandfather Moshe
stands out as a severe in-
dictment.
There is an interesting
item about Moshe planning
his own funeral. He selected
compositions of Yehudi
and Yalta's to be played
that time. Rolfe writes:
"Yehudi will also play
Ravel's `Kadish.' Moshe has
said of this work: "I love this
melody, this truly old
Jewish melody, although I
have-no use for the contents
of the prayer, the Kadish,
which are archaic and
tribalistic.' "
Thus, Rolfe pays respect
where due and exposes the
villain when necessary. It is
in this summation that his
"The Menuhins" becomes
an interesting document for
the historic records about a
family of many qualities
and one evildoer.
