Council Informs
Schools About
Jewish Holidays

Under the leadership of
Lawrence Pernick, Civil
Liberties Subcommittee
chairman, the Jewish
Community Council of Met-
ropolitan Detroit ap-
proached local school dis-
tricts on the issue of religion
in the public schools. .
This summer, Council
met with Dr. Carl Hassel,
Southfield schools superin-
tendent, and has been in
contact with both the Bir-
mingham and Farmington
school districts.
Officials at all of these
schools were reported recep-
tive to the council's policy
statement and guidelines
on religion in the public
schools.
In addition, Farmington
Superintendent Lewis
Shulman said that the dis-
trict's teachers are informed
of the meaning of the
Jewish High Holidays, the
dates upon which they fall
during the current school
year and are requested to be
cognizant of them when
making assignments or giv-
ing homework.
