It covers a wide range of subjects, including "Who Do You Think You Are," "Worry and Depression" and "Love." Some of the subjects the author arranged in groups of 18 because "In biblical Hebrew the word `chaff' means life and its numeri- cal value is 18." To avoid boredom, the author advises, among others, munch a raw carrot very slowly, give yourself a massage, or take a warm bath." Boring conversations, Gordon assures, begin with utterances, such as This is not my day," "Why pick on me?" and "I cannot believe this is happening to me again." In order to live a lively life, he recommends, exer- cise, write letters, and "fall in and out of love until you want to marry and then stay in love as long as you can (to the person you marry)." Concerning the Holocaust, Gordon concurs with Elie Wiesel's message You don't have to know your meats and poultry when you buy kosher, because not only do you receive the finest, but that very important personal touch. All our meats and poultry are triple in- spected to assure you, the public, that only when buying kosher do you receive the purest. "If we forget, it can happen again. There are no expla- nations, only stories, legends and memories." Gordon's thoughts on Is- rael are timely and straightforward: "Almost every adult living in Israel now is a 'survivor' either of the Holocaust or of a flight from Moslem countries and/or has lost a son or a father in one of four recent wars. The Western democ- racies kept none of their promises related to the establishment of a Jewish homeland — did nothing when five Arab nations violated the United Nations Declara- tion. "Question: Why is it that only Israel is expected to give up everything it wins in war it didn't start or want?" -- Sol Gordon is the director of the Institute for Family Research and Education in Syracuse, N.Y., and the author of "You Would if You Loved Me" and "The Sexual Adolescent and Parenting." The Talmud (Berakoth 48b) tells us that the four different benedictions which make up the Grace after meals (Birkat Hama- zon) were composed by four different authors. The first benediction, which expresses praise and thanks to the Almighty for providing food for all His creations, was composed by Moses. He is said to have expressed these words when he observed how the Al- mighty fed the Israelites with the manna on their way through the wilderness from Egypt to the Promised Land. The second benediction, which includes an expres- sion of thanks to the Al- mighty for giving us the Promised Land was com- posed by Joshua when he arrived in the Promised Land after leading the people of Israel across the Jordan. The third benediction, which expresses thanks for the establishment of Jerusalem as the location of the Temple was said to. have been composed through the efforts of David and Solomon. The city of Jerusalem was es- tablished as Israel's capi- tal by David while the Temple which made Jerusalem the Holy City was built by Solomon. The fourth benediction, which expresses thanks for the goodness of the Al- mighty is said to have been composed by the authors of the Mishna at the occasion when the Romans finally allowed the Jewish people to bury the victims, of the revolution at Bethar. In spite of the fact that the Romans were so cruel as to forbid the burial of those dead, it was the Grace of the Almighty which finally made them give in and allow the burial. This latter occasion probably was meant to indicate that at the height of human tragedy we must still be thankful for whatever opportunity is provided by the Almighty to bury the past and look forward to the future. The above talmudic de- scription illuminates in general what a Jew must be thankful for every day, i.e., The wisdom of the pru- dent is to look well to his way; but the folly of fools is deceit. his means of sustenance, the existence of Israel, the holiness of Jerusalem and the ability to sustain the tragedies of life and to over- come them. 547-6087 968-7598 invitations in blume inviting and exciting paper goods for all occasions calligraphy 20% discount marcia blume 851-5079 CAMP MEHIA REUNION SEPT. 8-9 at Camp Site (former Jewish youth camp) 1930s 1950s All Affiliates Please Contact P.O.
