In an appearance Tuesday before the Knesset Foreign Affairs and Defense Committee, Dayan disclosed that U.S. Secretary of State Cyrus Vance had asked Israel several days ago whether the press reports of its imminent economic col- lapse were true, and if so whether the U.S. could extend any help. Dayan argued, in his in- terviews, to the committee, and last Sunday to the cabinet that this image of economic weakness was in- timately bound up with cur- Dayan's statements quickly became the political focal point, both in Jerusalem and at the au- tonomy talks in Haifa. There was speculation that he was preparing his own resignation, and other speculation that he sought to move Begin to make changes in the composition of the cabinet. Likud Knesseters ex- pressed shock and dismay at the fierceness of Dayan's public attacks upon the government in which he serves. Opposition Knesset- ers seized upon Dayan's words as demonstrating the discord within the govern- ment: Labor's Moshe Shahal said the conclusion should be not only Dayan's resignation, but that of the entire cabinet. Excerpts from Dayan's interview: In the eyes of the world we seem to be dying economically ... I am not sure whether the Histadrut ... would give their support to this so- cial and economic chaos if Labor were in power ... perhaps this is legiti- mate, but what it means in our situation is suicide, and the Histadrut is not blameless in this, but first and foremost it is the co- alition itself that is to blame." It is not a matter of per- sonalities (in reference to Finance Minister Simha Ehrlich). Meanwhile, the Likud government slapped price controls on a wide variety of consumer products after an inflationary spurt sent prices soaring by 10-20 per- cent. The move immediately drew fire from the Israel Manufacturers Associa- tion. Minister of Com- merce and Industry Gi- deon Patt who ordered the price ceilings, admit- ted that the measure was distasteful to him as a member of the Liberal Party, but said circum- stances forced him to take it. The price controls apply to only 170 of the 350 con- sumer items that rose in price, among them food products, cosmetics, soft drinks and household clean- sers. The manufacturers of such items will need per- mission from the public committee on prices before they can introduce further hikes. Last month, Patt or- dered price controls on 35 other items. c, Israel, Nicaragua Continue Ties JERUSALEM (JTA) — Israel and Nicaragua will continue to maintain full diplomatic relations, ac- cording to an exchange of messages between the two governments over the weekend. The future of diplomatic relations between Israel and Nicaragua was ques- tioned following reports from Nicaragua that Israel had supplied military weapons to the regime of President Anastasio Somoza Debayle. However, Israel said it had ceased supplying the Somoza re- gime with arms at an early stage of the Sandinista revolution and even ordered a ship laden with arms to return to Israel although the arms had been paid for by the Nicaraguan govern- ment. Meanwhile, it was re- ported that ailelegation re- presenting the new Nicara- guan government met last week with Palestine Liber- ation Organization chief Yasir Arafat in Beirut. There had been reports dur- ing the Sandinista revolt against Somoza that the PLO had supplied the rebels with arms.
