IT WAS THE EVE-
NING before son Scott was
to leave for New York .. .
and college . . . Where to
take him for dinner would
have been a slight problem
except for one thing . . . he
loves cars and anything re-
lated to them . . . Since he
also likes good food . . . both
atmosphere and taste buds
were to be satisfied.
There were four of us for
Scott's going away . . . and it
could hardly have been a
better evening . . . Doug's
Body Shop on Woodward,
between Eight and Nine
Mile Rds. in Ferndale, was
the choice and a good one,
too.
Now that Chef Frank
Frazier is there, few places
can top the excellent food
. . . And the service has lit-
tle equal . . . Like Terry
Neault waiting on us in the
1946 Austin-Healy London
taxi . . . She's pleasant, per-
sonable, efficient, courteous
and smiling . . . with a per-
sonality that's enjoyable.
The cab has a roof on it,
plus doors on one side ...
the dash board on the
driver's right hand side
(European style), very
ample room ... like a
small limo . . . and even
the meter in shillings that
doesn't work anymore.
Terry brought us our or-
ders and you could tell it
was Frank at his best . . . He
makes a seafood chowder
with a creamed blend that's
hardly beatable . . . chock
full of shrimp, scallops,
crabmeat and clams.
Veal Oscar has no in-
between . . . It's either very
good or forget it . . . Frank is
a champ when it comes to
making this dish . . .
medallions of veal over as-
paragus spears, topped with
crabmeat and Bernaise
sauce.
Another excellent touch
was Terry bringing chilled
forks on a napkin for us to
choose . . . and then making
a salad bar-style delight for
each, with the fixings of
your choice put on as she
explained what everything
was.
Doug's Body Shop opened
in April, 1974, and has got-
ten better.
The restaurant is very
different ... very unique
... There we were, sur-
rounded by cutaways for
dining of a 1960 Mer-
cedes, 1951 Packard, 1958
Edsel, 1961 Mercury and
a 1941 Chevrolet truck .. .
In the lounge is .a 1975
AMC Gremlin for
cocktails, with seats in
the trunk . . . a 1960
Chrysler and a 1964
Thunderbird.
Frank has been at Doug's
Body Shop only six months,
and can tell the dif-
ference . . . He's got a cook-
ing flair that you get only in
Las Vegas, where Frank
was known all along the
strip . . . Jamaican-born
Frank loves his culinary ar-
tistry.
Owner Doug Diehl has a
couple of very able assis-
tants in daughter Debbie
and son Ryan, hostess and
host managers . . . and, of
course, the very capable and
much experienced Leo Fein.
Leo will open the new spot
in November at Hart Plaza
downtown . . . and Ryan will
go with him.
Even the busboys at
Doug's Body Shop are
dressed properly ... like
the guys you see at Indy
500 pit stops.
There's also tables for
folks who desire them .. .
but I'll take an auto anyday
for its privacy and unique-
ness . . . with old-fashioned
Tiffany-style lampt .. .
even though there's a sign
as you walk in, "City Ordi-
nance. No Eating In Cars."
Doug's Body Shop is an
experience . . . a truly good
one you'll want to talk ab-
