Oakland Hills, one of the
world's most difficult golf
courses, has been made
even tougher for the 61st
Professional Golfers' Asso-
ciation Championship,
which concludes Sunday.
The rolling, well-treed
7,014 yard, par 70 layout
was originally designed in
1917 by Donald Ross, and
was redesigned by Robert
Trent Jones before the 1951
U.S. Open. It promptly was
dubbed "the monster" by
Ben Hogan because of its
more than 100 sand traps,
narrow fairways, and un-
dulating, raised greens.
Jones needed only to
"touch up" the course with a
few more traps — the total
is now 119 — and even nar-
rower fairways for the 1979
PGA Championship. New
trees have been placed in
strategic spots to throw up
barriers for errant shots.
And, the grass in the rough
has been allowed to grow
long.
One of the proofs of the
regard in which Oakland
Hills is held is the fact
that it is one of only five
courses that have been
singled out for the stag-
ing of the U.S. Golf Asso-
ciation Open Cham-
pionship on four or more
occasions.
Al Mengert, host profes-
sional, said: "As a player, all
I cane say is that Oakland
Hills was tough enough be-
fore -Robert Trent Jones

made it tougher for the PGA
Championship." Mengert
predicted Tom Watson
would win with a score of
278, two under par, for the
PGA event.
Gallery tickets are avail-
able at Oakland Hills.

Three Ex-Nazis
to Go on Trial

BONN (JTA) — Three
former Nazis will go on trial
in October for their alleged
role in the murder of more
than 33,000 French Jews
between 1942 and 1944.
The three are Kurt
Lischka, who was Hitler's
deputy commander of the
Gestapo in France from
1940 to 1943, and two of his
colleagues, Herbert Hagen
and Ernst Heinrichsohn.
The three were indicted
June 1978, but were not ar-
rested.
In 1950, a French court
sentenced Lischka in absen-
tia to hard labor for his part
in deporting 100,000
French Jews and Com-
munists to Nazi concentra-
tion camps.
He remained free, how-
ever, because the 'West
German constitution pre-
vented German subjects
from being extradited. But
in 1975, West Germany's
Parliament ratified a treaty
with France permitting
Lischka and his colleagues
to be tried in Cologne.

TEL AVIV — Partici- being fired from their jobs,
pants at an international evicted from their homes or
conference of homosexuals being the subject of public
near Tel Aviv two weeks violence.
They said their confer-
ago held a public demon-
stration to protest what ence was the focus of
they termed the denial of harassment by the rabbi-
nate and the Interior Minis-
equal rights in Israel.
Demonstrators told re-. try and that the police
porters that homosexuals in threatened not to protect
Israel are in constant fear of participants from violence.

Doctors Pleased With Begin

JERUSALEM (JTA) —
Premier Menahem Begin's
condition continues to im-
prove and he was expected
to be discharged from
Hadassah Hospital today.

Dr. Silvan Lavie, head of
the medical team that has
been treating Begin for a
minor stroke he suffered
two weeks ago, said a series
of tests showed "significant
progress" toward improving
his eye-sight. Begin's vision
was impaired by a small clot
lodged in a blood vessel sup-
plying his brain.
Begin conferred at length
Monday with Deputy Pre-
mier Yigael Yadin in his
hospital room. The pre-
mier's press adviser,
Shlomo Nakdimon, said he
was looking well and was
walking in his room.
Begin has begun reading
former U.S. President
Richard Nixon's *autobiog-
raphy, an indication that
his vision has improved,
Nakdimon noted. Neverthe-

less, Begin will need
period of rest at home bet,
returning to work, his doc.-
tors said.
