Joint Venture for Peace by 2 Israeli Banks NEW YORK — The two largest competing banks in Israel, Bank Leumi and Bank Hapoalim, have opened a branch together in El Arish. According to the Egyptian-Israeli peace treaty, El Arish is where customs inspections in con- nection with trade between the two nations will be made. Jacob Levinson, Bank of chairman Hapoalim sees the Sinai town as one in which a bank branch can play an impor- tant role. Levinson calls the branch, "A service granted to the peace process, not a business venture." Court Overrules Arab Farmers JERUSALEM (JTA) — The Israel Supreme Court last week ruled against a complaint by Arab farmers on the West Bank that their land had been illegally seized for the establishment of a Jewish settlement named Mattityahu in the Modiin area, the region associated with the Mac- cabees. 4 The court at the same time withdrew the tempor- ary injunction it had issued last April banning work on the settlement. Justice Meir Shamgar, who announced the court decision, ordered the com- plainants to pay all legal expenses. He declined to state the reasons behind the ruling but indicated they would be made public at a later date. The land involved was seized by the military gov- ernment in September 1977 to establish a settlement for the ultra-Orthodox Poalei Agudat Israel.
