Jean Ellmann, Poet, Lecturer,
Music Commentator Dies at 92

Jeannette
(Jean)
Ellmann, who gained
acclaim in many quarters as
a poet, died July 25 at age 92
in Ft. Lauderdale, Fla.,
where she had made her
home for the past decade.
She was the widow of
Judge James I. Ellmann,
with whom she shared the
many community and espe-
cially Zionist interests, and
with whom she traveled
widely, including to Israel
and pre-Israel Palestine.

as a music and opera critic
for local newspapers.
In Florida, she also was
on call in recent years as
a lecturer to graduate
students in universities.
While her poetry has not
been published in book
form, the manuscripts ac-
cumulated by her children
and grandchildren are vol-
uminous.
• Many of her poems ap-
peared in The Detroit
Jewish News and were re-
printed in other newspap-
ers.

has emerged as an
authority on Joyce and
Yeats and has been
awarded several honorary
degrees, including two last
month by Emery and Bos-
ton universities. He now
teaches at Oxford.
Her other two sons
have important Michigan
roles, Erwin in leader-
ship of the American
Civil Liberties Union and
William headed the State
Bar Association.'
