WATCH
The- occasion was his 75th
birthday which his family
celebrated with him on the
previous day, and the im-
pressive event was marked
by a series of honors ac-
corded the eminent De-
troiter.
Presided over by Dr. Ed-
ward Cushman, the event
gave Wayne State Univer-
sity and representatives of
many movements the
opportunity to express
gratitude to Simons for
services that embraced the
social, political and
humanitarian aspects of the
city and the university to
which he had devoted him-
self untiringly.
It could have been an
event for thousands who
know Simons, who have
benefited from friend-
ship and his association
with the most representa-
tive aspects of Greater
Detroit. The more than
100 at the luncheon were
representative of the
masses associated in the
Simons interests.
Especially noteworthy at
the function was the an-
nouncement WSU
President Thomas Bonner
that the Leonard N. Simons
Room is being designated in
the Purdy Library Building
in recognition of the
thousands of valuable books
and manuscripts contained
therein as Simons gifts.
In behalf of the WSU
board of governors, Mildred
Jeffrey presented Simons
with a portrait of him by
WSU artist Fred King.
Former WSU President
George Gullen joined with
the -other speakers in
evaluating Simons' many
gifts to the university, his
humanitarian services, his
skills as a public speaker
and writer of many impor- -
tant memos, his sense of
humor.
Dr. Bernard Goldman,
director of Wayne State
University Press,
humorously reviewed the
many Simons' interests in
which he is involved, and
seriously, with the others
on the program, ex-
r Si-
pressed gratitude fo
mons' role as a builder of
WSU Press, in recogni-
tion of which the building
housing the WSU Press
has been named the Si-
mons WSU Press -Build-
ing.
