THE DETROIT JEWISH NEWS 32 Friday, July 21, 1919 9e:44 & Veute'a .5 ea/ rood NEW YORK (JTA) — HIAS has announced that it has doubled its commitment for the current year in as- sisting Indochinese refu- gees. Gaynor Jacobson, the organization's executive vice president, stated that HIAS is prepared to receive and help in the resettlement of 6,000 Indochinese, many of them boat people, instead of its original commitment for 3,000. He said HIAS provides the same assistance and services to the Indochinese as it does to Jewish refu- gees, including reception at the airport, clearance through immigration and customs and sponsorship by a relative, a community- or agency. Jewish community agencies assist with hous- ing, employment, health and any other problems that may arise. In Geneva, the executive committee of the European Council of Jewish Commu- nity Services (ECJCS) is- sued an urgent plea to its member organizations, to put their experience in ref- ugee resettlement at the disposal of their respective governments willing to as- sist the boat people. Fritz Hollander, of Stockholm, chairman of the ECJCS, declared that "All of us who. survived the Nazi period must be stirred into action or else left with a feeling of im- potence and despair by the great tragedy unfold- ing before our eyes." Maurice Schamisso, of Antwerp, who heads the ECJCS social service com- mittee, said there were 22101 Coolidge 1 Block So of 9 Mi Call 548-4031 We Bone-Skin-Grind-Fish Free WE WRAP FOR FREEZING Under Supervision of The•Council of Orthodox Rabbis STRICTLY KOSHER MEAT MARKET 13831 W. 9 Mile Rd., Oak Park 543-7092 TOP RIB ROAST WHOLE BRISKET SHOULDER ROAST SHOULDER STEAK FISH TAIL ROAST BONELESS CHUCK ROAST FLANKEN 2.29 lb. $2.29 $2.29 $ 2.29 $ 2.29 $ 2.29 lb. $2.29 lb. lb. lb. lb. lb. Dr. Rene Weill, of Bern, noted that the Social Wel- fare Committee of the Fed- eration of Jewish Com- munities in Switzerland has formed part of a consortium of eight voluntary agencies which has taken charge of the resettlement of 1,700 Vietnamese refugees ad- mitted last year and an additional 2,000 being ad- mitted this year. The agen- cies work in close coopera- tion with the Swiss gov- ernment. Weill said much credit for the success of the program could be attributed to the use of intensive training given the refugees in the languages and customs of Switzerland, a program modeled on Israel's ulpanim used in the acculturation of immigrants from many countries. A conference on the refugees, called by United Nations Secretary General Kurt Waldheim, was held this week. The UN invited 72 countries and 12 foreign ministers and Israel was repre- sented by its Minister of Absorption, David Levy. In Brussels, the Jewish Community Center has agreed to take in three refu- gee families as a first step to aid the Belgian govern- ment's plan to admit 10,000. The Canadian Jewish Congress has decided to sponsor the resettlement of 1,000 boat people beyond the 8,000 the Canadian government has accepted for immigration. The congress will also contribute $10,000 toward direct relief aid and will ap- proach leaders of the non- Jewish community to inter- vene with the Canadian government to admit more boat people into the coun- try.
