The three weeks between the fast of the 17th of Tam- muz and the fast of the ninth of Av are designated as a mourning period be- cause they are considered the height of the develop- ment of the tragedy of the Jewish people. It was on the first of these dates that the protective wall around the city of Jerusalem was broken through and it was on the ninth of Av (Aug. 2 this year) that the Temple went up in flames. The name "Bayn ha- Metzorim" was assigned to this three-week period. The term comes from a passage in the Book of Lamentations (1:3) which speaks of the pursuers and haters of Jews overtaking them "within the straits." The rabbis have translated this phrase as meaning "from one trou- ble to another." One rabbinic source claims that these three weeks represent the fast of Daniel which lasted Vandals Hit Beth Achim Senator Goldwater Opposes U.S. Oil Pledge to Israel Cong. Beth Achim had three stained glass windows damaged and several other windows broken by rock- throwing vandals last Fri- , day night or early Saturday. Synagogue President Allan Rosenberg estimates -the damage at $2,500- $3,000 to repair. On June 30, the synagogue's United Hebrew Schools branch was broken into and $40 in cash, $500 in checks and a radio, cal- culator and another piece of equipment was stolen. A Southfield man, Tarik Wardia, age 17, was ar- raigned in that case on Fri- day' in Southfield District Court. WASHINGTON (JTA) — As gasoline prices went up 40 percent in Israel, the U.S. Senate was told the United States should ref- rain from commitments on supplying oil abroad as it is committed to Israel. Sen. Barry Goldwater (R-Ariz.) raised the matter of the Carter Administra- tion's commitment to Israel in a floor speech in which he set forth a report that noted the National Association of Arab-Americans are fight- ing the commitment and tied part of its opposition to Jewish settlements on the West Bank and Gaza Strip. "Americans sweating it out in gas lines and being Detroit Chapter of RELIGIOUS ZIONISTS OF AMERICA Mizrachi - Hapoel Hamizrachi again will provide 'FOOD CERTIFICATES for more than 1,000 NEEDY ISRAELI FAMILIES FOR THE COMING High Holy Days Food Certificates are Available in amounts of $15 and up SEND YOUR CONTRIBUTION for one or more Food Certificates to MIZRACHI HAPOEL HAMIZRACHI 23125 Coolidge, Oak Park, Mi. 48237 398.-7180 asked to turn up their ther- mostats," Goldwater said "will be interested to know that President Carter's ill- timed promise to guarantee Israel's oil supply for 15 years is going ahead on schedule." Goldwater said that "legislation to accom- plish this part of the deal for an Israeli-Egyptian peace agreement has been quietly slipped into legislation which is now pending_ before both Houses." He was referring to the legislation which would authorize the Export Ad- ministration to exempt the Israeli oil guarantee from a general ban on the export of Alaskan oil. Goldwater did :not di- rectly urge elimination of the guarantee but noted that "the chances are that the U.S. will soon have to start making good on the promise President Carter made" and he said "it is long past time that this country (the U.S.) faced up to the fact that it cannot take care of all the needs throughout the world that happen to come to our official atten- tion." When the Holy Land does not contain all of the territory "between these boundaries" the Jews are in trouble. Thus the period is a sad one. It is customary to refrain from eating meat or drink- ing wine from the first day of Av through the ninth day, the "Fast of the Ninth of Av" because the first day of Av is the anniversary of the death three weeks when he was in trouble. Others claim that the phrase "within the straits" is properly translated "within the boundaries" and these three weeks are called by this name because portions from the end of the Book of Numbers are read on the Sabbaths between these three weeks and they contain a description of the "boundaries" that were set by the Almighty for the land of Israel. When the Holy Land does not contain all of • Knesset Faction Opposes Begin JERUSALEM (JTA) — A new Knesset faction, "Banai," was formed last week. The acronym stands for "Brit Neemanei Eretz Israel" (Covenant of the Faithful of Eretz Israel) and the faction comprises Likud rebels Geula Cohen and Moshe Shamir. The two said they would be "the only real opposi- tion," constantly attacking what they regard as the "disastrous policies" of the Begin government and striving to ensure Israel's retention of, and settlement in, all parts of Eretz Israel. of the High Priest Aaron (the brother of Moses). The special restrictions which forbid meat or wine during these nine days relate to the original tradition of sac- rifice which came to an end at this date. Animal meat and wine were placed on the altar during sacrifices. Eliminat- ing these two ingredients from our diet during these nine days reminds us of the tragic end of the sacrificial rite in Jerusalem. . .„ E njoy SUKKOT AFTYEERALR in your own backyard o 8' x 12' x 7' ,< (if JP r.
