THE DETROIT JEWISH NEWS Russia Trains Hundreds of Palestinians' in Terrorist Schools Says Journalist LONDON (JTA) — The Soviet Union is training "Hundreds of Palestinians" in terrorist -schools near Moscow and along the Black Sea, and there are similar training camps in Bulgaria and Czechoslovakia, a British newspaper reported. Details of the connection between the Soviet Union and the Palestinians were given in the Daily Tele- graph by journalist Robert Moss, a specialist on sub- 'rsion who two weeks ago tended the Jerusalem conference on terrorism. Moss said that because of the Soviet support for PaleS- tinian terrorism, as well as its toll of innocent lives, it is a "tragic error" for any Western government to con- fer legality on the Palestine Liberation Organization. He named the Military Academy at Simferopol in the Crimea as "a pri- mary reception center for PLO men selected for sabotage and terrorist training in the Soviet Union." Courses, said to include river crossings and all types of sabotage, are attended by mixed groups of 50 to 60 PLO trainees, drawn from different guerrilla organ- izations according to a quota system. A "typical" course at Sim- feropol included recruits from Yasir Arafat's El Fatah, the Syrian backed Al Saiqa, the Palestine Libera- tion Front and George Habash's Popular Front for the Liberation of Palestine. Moss claims that Palesti- nians of above-average . aptitude are sometimes transferred to special courses in KGB or GRU (Soviet military intelli- gence) schools, which also receive a steady intake of intelligence officers from Libya, Syria, Iraq and South Yemen. In the Soviet view, Moss added, the PLO is a "tre- mendously useful asset." It can supply shock troops, like the members of Idi Amin's bodyguard in Uganda; subversive agents in the Persian Gulf sheikh- doms and Saudi Arabia that can now hold a knife to the throats of pro-Western monarchs";. and "all- purpose terrorists," he wrote. The PLO "can also serve as the middleman in supplying arms to the na- tional liberation move- ments," as well as carrying out missions of specifically Soviet rather than Palesti- nian interest. Brandt have now seen fit to accord," referring to the re- cent meeting of Kreisky, Brandt and Arafat. He continued: "For the sake of a cosmetic detente with Russia, there has been a malign tendency on the part of some Western gov- ernments to keep from the public the mounting body of evidence now in the hands of Western intelligence services of Soviet guidance for the PLO and interna- tional terrorism. It is time for all civilized nations to stand shoulder to shoulder on the issue of in- ternational terrorism and condemn those (like Chan- cellor Kreisky) who have been ready, for the sake of short term expediency, to accord a false respectability to those who murder women and chirdren with the aid of the KGB." Head of Israeli TV Fired; Employees Stage Protest JERUSALEM (JTA) — The managing committee of the Israel Broadcasting Authority (IBA) voted 4-2 Monday not to renew the term of Arnon Zuckermann, director of national televi- sion. His ouster, however, has sparked a' revolt by television employes who charged that Zuckermann was not removed for profes- sional reasons but because he refused to follow the Likud party line in the per- formance of his duties. Four coalition represen- tatives on the managing committee voted against 'uckermann, two of the .bor Alignment voted in nis favor and another, re- presenting Likud's Liberal Party Wing, abstained. While the committee was deliberating, several hundred television em- ployes marched outside of IBA headquarters chanting "independent television" and "free State, free televi- sion." They accused Likud of politicizing the Broad- casting Authority, an inde- pendent quasi- governmental agency. Prof. Reuven Yaron, the Likud appointee who heads the IBA, said in an inter- view yesterday that he would quit if Zuckermann was approved for another term. He said the manage- ment committee was acting in accordance with the, broadcast law and that IBA employes had no right to dictate its decisions. Educa- tion Minister Zevulun Hammer, a leader of the National Religious Party, has demanded on several occasions that Zuckermann be replaced. Yosef Lapid, another Likud appointee who is di- rector general of the IBA, is expected to take over Zuc- kermann's job until a new TV director is named. The television workers committee issued a state- ment saying that they have lost confidence in the ability of the managing committee to discuss or rule on any issue without political bias. The workers said the man- aging committee has no right to appoint a new TV director and that anyone so appointed would have no cooperation frog) the work- ers.
