The full com- mittees will convene as scheduled Aug. 5-6 in Haifa. STOCKHOLM (JTA) — The Socialist International ended its leadership confer- ence over the weekend with the 22 delegations almost evenly split over whether the International's president, former West German Chancellor Willy Brandt, and its vice president, Austrian Chan- cellor Bruno Kreisky, should have met with Yasir Arafat, head of the Pales- tine Liberation Organiza- tion in Vienna earlier this month. ' The FJE was created within the past year through an alliance be- tween Federation and the United Jewish Appeal of Greater New York, and the Joseph S. Gruss family, long-time benefactors of Jewish education. In a matched fund arrangement, the Gross family, UJA and Federation agreed to con- tribute annual sums of $1 million each for a five-year period. , The 16-member commit- tee, which has evaluated and set objectives, com- prises four subcommittees, each responsible for a key aspect of Jewish education here. Funds will be allo- cated in the following areas of education: demonstration grants for formal and in- formal Jewish education — essentially for innovative projects; financial assis- tance in the form of basic grants and block grants to schools; grants for educator welfare benefits; and grants for school mergers. He pointed to Israel's contributions to socialism and democ- racy. Peres stressed that it would be harmful to Is- rael's interests if a PLO delegation was invited to a Socialist International meeting, even as an ob- server. , It is believed that Brandt and Kreisky plan to invite a PLO delegation to the Socialist International meeting in Madrid next year. A decision on this is expected to be made when the Socialist International. Bureau meets in Lisbon Oct. 30-31. Last week, Israel's Labor Party informed the Socialist International that it will "suspend its activities" within the International if Arafat is invited to attend a session. The message was conveyed to Brandt by Labor MK Micha Harish in Strasbourg.
