The looming crisis stems from a growing lack of confidence in the gov- ernment's ability to manage Israel's rapidly deteriorat- ing economy. Pressure is mounting within the Liberal Party wing of Likud for the resig- nations of its four Cabinet ministers — though not for withdrawal from the coali- tion — while the opposition Labor Alignment is calling for dissolution of the Knes- set and new elections. The Knesset Presidium urged the Labor Party and Sheli factions to hold off on the no-confidence motions they submitted Friday until Begin has recovered and is back at work. Meanwhile, former Foreign Minister Yigal Allon and Labor Party Whip Moshe Shahal have taken the initiative to call for new elections. The price of gasoline soared by 40 percent last week. At the current ex- change rate this means that a gallon of 94 octane gasoline now costs the Is- raeli motorist about $2.60. Economic circles said that the gas price rise would in- evitably mean a rise in water and electric rates, al- though for the moment the government has -not im- posed these increases. In- evitably there will also be a ripple effect of price rises throughout the economy be- cause fuel, whether for production or for transport, is a component in almost every commodity and serv- ice. Energy Ministry sources said the first rise would be followed by a second wave of price hikes before the end of the year in order to keep ab- reast of world price rises and with the steady fall of the pound which reached an all-time low of IL 26 — $1 this week. The gasoline rise was one of two measures decided by the Cabinet. The other was a 60 percent rise in the cost of imported frozen meat. The Cabinet was torn by the government's in- tention to eliminate all subsidies. Finance Minis- ter Simha Ehrlich intro- duced figures that showed that without the Jewish Workers Helped in Miss. Flood Clean-Up NEW YORK (JTA — A rescue mission of Memphis Jewish teenagers and adults was organized on one day's notice to travel 250 miles through the night to Jackson, Miss., last April to help in the massive clean- up of the effects of the mas- sive flood that struck the community, according to Robert A. Silver, assistant executive director of the Memphis Jewish Commu- nity Center. Writing in the "JIATB Cir- cle," the bi-monthly publi- cation of the National Jewish Welfare Board, Silver reported that, armed with a truck loaded with disinfectant, boots and a variety of clean-up mate- rials, the Memphis caravan of volunteers drove to Jackson. He noted that most of the city's 220 Jewish families live in northeast Jackson, the section hardest hit by the flood. Silver said Jackson's lone synagogue, Beth Israel, perched on fairly high ground, remained dry. Similarly, removal of the subsidy on cooking oil would mean a 160 percent price rise, and elimination of the milk subsidy would confront consumers with a 121 percent rise from IL 5.10 a liter to IL 11.30. "What will a family with five children do?" Begin asked when Ehrlich and his deputy, Yehezkel Flimin, showed him the figures shortly before the Cabinet session began. WOODWARD, BIRMINGHAM JEWISH NATIONAL FUND ComfortGYe, ComfortcYe, c7VIr People In this 31st anniversary year of Israel's renewed independence, what more appropriate way to mark Tisha B'Av than by affirming our solidarity with the people of Israel by redeeming and developing the land of Israel. Tisha B'Av is the occasion for Jews everywhere to recall the destruction of the Holy Temple, that traumatic event which ushered in two millenia of Jewish dispersion and statelessness: It is also a time to give thanks for the miracle of Israel reborn in our lifetime and the restoration of Jewish sovereignty in our historic homeland. MAKE YOUR CONTRIBUTION TO THE JEWISH NATIONAL FUND MORE GENEROUS THIS TISHA b'AV Over the years it has become a proud tradition for synagogues through- out the United States to conduct appeals or other fund raising functions during their Tisha B'Av observances for the Jewish National Fund. This year, more than ever, as Israel faces a critical moment of challenge and opportunity, the members of all congregations will want to join JNF in bringing new life and color to the remaining wastelands of the Jewish State.
