I would appreciate the opportunity to use your great newspaper to say shalom to all the many friends who have made Our stay so memorable and suc- cessful. It is hard for us to leave such a warm community. However, we follow in the footsteps of the many hun- dreds of Detroiters who have settled in Israel, many of whom we have been privileged to meet in the last two years. They are very special people who do credit to the Jewish com- munity of Detroit. It is hard to leave one's family and friends, to move thousands of miles away, and to adjust to a new culture, a new lan- guage and a lower standard of living. Yet, every year dedicated men and women do it in order to participate per- sonally in the creation of a Jewish society and to personally witness the age-old Jewish dream of redemption. Whether or not -they opt for aliya, it is our hope that our many friends in Detroit will visit us in Israel. Yehuda Berman * * * Emigres Should Be Sent to Israel Editor, The Jewish News: All emigres from Russia holding- Israeli visas and being transported at the ex- pense of the Jewish people_ should be channeled to Is- rael. -Those wishing to go elsewhere should do so at their own expense. It seems incongruous that while Soviet emigres are coming to the U.S. we keep open aliya offices to send American Jews to Israel. a free year of member- ship as a wedding gift. There is no correspond- ing grace period for those who remain unmarried past age 25. This is only one - symptom of the larger problem, which is the assumption that un- married people are un- happy people. Within synagogues and the community at large, Jews are sharply divided along the line of marital status. Rather than expend- ing time, energy and_money to establish an artificial "singles" society, with ac- tivities limited to discos and volleyball, our community might be better off if singles were accepted as equals and encouraged to participate in all the activities offered by synagogues and other groups. Most importantly, our community must abandon the attitude that unmarried young adults are pathetic, undesirable, unproductive people who must be "fixed up" — as if broken, or in- adequate in themselves — before they become accept- able members of Jewish society. RALPH YAMRON'S Orchestra 320 Pieces Oakland Press Apologizes for Biased Column in June of Representatives Jewish relations agencies have met with Oakland Press associate editor Neil Munro to respond to a col- umn published in June which contained anti- Jewish undertones. The article, written by Szabolcs Mesterhazy, made reference to "the powerful Jewish lobby," "our Jewish senators" and "those Jews who could be loyal only to a slh land." nro accepted the criti- cism of a lack of sensitivity to the Jewish community's concerns, and to the article's contents. NOOS-NOOS-NOOS Readers Forum Editor, The Jewish News: The July 13 "Letter from your mother" (advertise- ment) is a superb example of how to alienate a large and growing group of young Jewish adults who are un- married and not frantic about it.
