He and Mary would have enjoyed the dinner given at Jolly Miller . . . and Vincent will be pleased at the strides being made by Les Taubman and his fine staff . . . particularly in the upholding of standards. - In the world of culture, the name of Vincent Price stands out . . . Gourmet dining is a part of that cul- ture. AMONG THE UN- SUNG Chinese restaurants in our area is one that enjoys an enviable reputa- tion . . . consistent good- ness . . . In talking about China Gate, opened 2 1/2. years ago in the Pine Lake Mall on Orchard Lake Rd. between Pine Lake and Long Lake Rds., owner Kin Ming Chin is a familiar face . . and long-time know- how gent in the restaurant business. • Back in 1947, he started as a'waiter with Eugene Foo- at Kow Kow Inn on W. McNichols . . . Through the years, Kin has learned much about Chinese cuisine . . . and his China Gate is living aroof . . . Besides the regular Chinese fare, which is very _good, his epicurean specials are extremely joy- ful. The place is bright and cheerful, with chandeliers that slowly revolve* . . Seating is for 176 in three dining rooms . .with facilities available for pri- vate parties. Our waitress, Lesa Rayess, knows her business . . and it was a pleasure to h* ave the efficiency she ex- hibited. China Gate is worth knowing about . . . haven't met anybody yet who hasn't found this to be so. DOUGLAS GRECH (Duglass of Restaurant Duglass on Southfield Rd.) took a full course of study in the commercial foods dept. at Chadsey High . . . and then spent a one-year schol- arship in Paris at the famed Ecole Hoteliere de Paris . . THE TWO INTERNA- TIONAL disco champions from Canada who recently put on an exhibition at Scandals in Ramada Inn of Southfield on Telegraph, had the big crowd buzzing with their amazing exhibi- tion in fancy disco dancing. Too bad some who were invited never showed up . . . they certainly missed an extraordinary demon- stration . . . plus an eve- ning of congeniality. Gar Lester, son of Morrie Lester, is the new manager at Scandals, moving over from another disco on the northwest. Frankie Gell teaches disco at Scandals Sun- * days and Wednesdays at 10:30 p.m. . . . and if you can concentrate, there are backgammon tables set up for in-between enjoyment . . . New sales manager at Ramada Inn is Mike Haggerty. Doug Derello, one of the top chefs in this area, is the new executive chef at Ramada of Southfield (Summerfield's, banquets, etc.) which is good news . . . He does a real fine job . . . and is a swell guy to know. THERE ARE FOUR ex-Darby employees work- ing at Harry Weiss'-Origi- nal Esquire in Harvard Row on 11 Mile and Lahser. Bob Winkler met Harry 12 years ago on the sidewalk outside Darbys the day after it burned down . . . When the Original Es- quire opened in Harvard Row, Bob came as the counter man and is still there . . . Ethel Thompson makes salads . . . Herb Showalter is day grill man . . . Remember those de- licious soups and pickled fish among other things? . . . The fellow who made them at Darbys, Eli Karavadas, is also a stal- wart at Harry's deli. OF THE FOUR places that have been on Green- field and Lincoln, Spiro's Coney Island is the most successful operation of all . . . and with good reason.
