By WARREN FREEDMAN The 11,000 Jews residing in Colombia are scattered throughout the country. It is believed that the descen- dants of the Marranos in the Antioquia region have maintained a number of customs which are char- acteristically Jewish. A number of aristocratic Colombians are believed to be .descendants •of these Marranos. Jews started to arrive in the middle of the 19th Cen- tury from the Caribbean is- lands to the port cities of Columbia. However, they later converted and assimi- lated. The present contempor- ary Jewish community was made up first of Sephardic Jews from the Mediterra- nean and later of Jews from Eastern Europe (mainly Po- land). The'last group to ar- rive in the country was the German Jews who settled in ColOmbia between World War I and World War II. criticizing Israel when they disagree with its policies, but should initially try to air their views in private, Greville Janner, the new president of the Board of Deputies of British Jews, said. Declaring himself a staunch Zionist, Janner, pledged himself to strive for better relations between the Israeli and British govern- ments.. He said "it would be a disaster for the United Kingdom to fall out with Is- rael." Janner-was elected to the Board's presidency unop- posed after serving six years as its senior vice president. He is a son of Lord Janner, another former Board president. Addressing an inau- gural press conference, he expressed concern at the- tendency of certain British newspapers to hold Israel responsible for the higher oil prices set by Middle East oil producing countries. He said "We totally reject that view." The Board will continue 'to press the gov- ernment to take a firmer line against the Arab boycott and to cease authen- ticating "negative certifi- cates of origin" for goods ex- ported to certain Arab coun- tries, Janner said. , -On the domestic scene, the Board will step up its fight against the "Hitlerite" National Front movement in close liaison with other minority groups since, Jan- ner said, "The Jewish com- munity, and the community in general, depends on the survival of democracy." The Colombia Immi- gration law of 1939 closed the door to Jewish immi- gkation. Bogota's 7,000 Jews have three synagogues. The community has an umbrella organization, Federation General de Communidades, which is affiliated with the World Jewish Congress. The three congregations, Sephardic, Ashkenazic and the German congregation, - each has its own communal institutions. Enjoy the finest: AJCommittee Focuses on Aged in New, Pamphlet 7. "A Unique Shopping Experience - A Cut Above the Rest!" There is one Jewish school, the Colombo Hebrew School in Bogota, with 1,000 students including some non-Jews. The remote Andean mountain village of Popayan is known in Colombia as a Catholic mecca, but on Calle de Reloj there is a modest synagogue. Here a handful of mostly Syrian JeWs eke out a bare existence, and yet all 10 families provide a "minyan" regularly. - Popayan has old churches, and iinages of pained faces on sumptu- ous robes; it has the grace of colonial architecture amid primitive mountain terrain. It is a village where art blossoms with the light of day from be- hind golden altars or from stone bridges. Popayan has an ideal climate — and the small Jewish colony appears- happy. Cali, the principal city of the Cauca Valley- below Popayan is nestled in an ex- traordinarily lovely and fer- tile valley 3,300 feet above sea level. Cali has a population of 3,000 Jews, nearly all of NEW YORK — People over 65 years of age in the United States, who now constitute more than 10 percent of the country's population, are particular victims of urban neglect and face critical unmet neets in housing, health care and in- come. This point was made by Robert Wolf, director of the American Jewish Commit- tee's legal advocacy pro- gram for the aged, in a new pamphlet on "America's Aged," which has just been published. To order the pamphlet, write American Jewish Committee, 165 E. 56th St., New York 10022. There is a charge. _ CETA Funding OK for Yeshivot NEW YORK — The U.S. Department of Labor has published regulations on the use of funds from CETA in yeshivot and other secta- rian - schools which reverse its original position on this issue. The fight for non-public school rights was conducted by Agudath Israel of America, representing a co- alition of Orthodox Jewish groups involved in activi- ties funded by CETA, and by the U.S. Catholic Con- ference.
